Second Dog Removed from Abuse Suspects' Home in Brick

3-year-old Cocker Spaniel named Aby appeared to be in 'decent shape'

Authorities have removed a second dog from the home of a Brick couple suspected of abusing a 13-year-old Cocker Spaniel, then claiming they found it on the side of the road.

The couple was charged in connection with the physical abuse of Samurai, or "Sammy," now improving with care and treatment at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital.

The dog removed Thursday afternoon was a 3-year-old Cocker Spaniel named Aby, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, Chief Humane Law Enforcement Officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The dog was voluntarily handed over to officers by Keith E. Morgan, 56, and Shauna Ewing Morgan, 43, of Sawmill Road, who have been charged with abusing another dog named Samurai.

"We were getting anonymous tips for the last few days that there might be a second animal in the house," said Amato. "The anonymous tips were describing a mobile cocker spaniel, so we knew it wasn't the same dog."

Amato described Aby as "recently groomed" and in "decent shape."

The dog is now in the SPCA's custody and will be examined by a veterinarian.

The Morgans were cooperative and handed Aby over voluntarily, said Amato.

"They agreed that due to the circumstances of the charges that are pending, it might be wise just to sign that animal over," he said.

The Morgans are each facing charges related to the abuse endured by Samurai – now known as Sammy – who was found covered in excrement and urine and trapped in his own fur, unable to move.

Keith Morgan first said he found the dog at the side of the road in a garbage bag, authorities have said, but later it was determined he and his wife were the dog's owners.

I didn't know Sammy was thirteen. Poor guy. No dog should have to live like that, but to do that to an older dog is beyond reprehensible.

I don't know any human beings could treat any animal like Sammy was treated. Now they have more charges of abuse against a 2nd dog. If they didn't want to care for them then take them to a rescue or a shelter where they can be cared for properly.

"Recently groomed" as in they knew they better get the second one looking as good as they could before the knock on the door came. I'm sure that dog would have ended up in the same sad shape in no time.

Momof2: i bet your one hundred percent right. These people should not be allowed to own an animal n should spend at least a year in jail with some very steep fines!!

You are totally right. Recently groomed does mean they knew they better get the second dog in presentable shape. My gut is that they are going to use the fact that their other dog was in okay shape as a reason to show they are good pet owners and the condition of the second dog should be considered when they face charges about Sammy. I will be watching this case CLOSELY. These poor excuse for human being better be held accountable.

Serious jail time and steep fines sounds like a perfect punishment. It is time to take a serious stand against animal cruelty in NJ. Enough is enough...

I heard they will probably get a $1,000 fine and 3 to 4 months in jail. In other words The animal abusers get a slap on the hand. Why was't there condo searched after they knew Sammy was theirs? If it was a child...one would hope the police would search the home for more children. I hope the Morgans have no young children as well. Once abusers always abusers. Sammie almost died...this second dog the groomer or pet salon needs to be questioned as to the shape of this second dog.
