Borough men are OK, Middletown woman injured, after two-car crash, say police

Two Point Pleasant men were treated and released from a car accident scene involving their car colliding with another driven by a Middletown woman in Holmdel on Friday morning.

Mark Dillon, 48, and Frank Ray, 46, both of Willow Street, Point Borough, were in a car that collided with a car driven by Nicole Digiamo, 20, Harmony Road, Middletown, at the intersection of County Road 520 and Middletown Road, at about 8:45 a.m. Friday, Holmdel police said in a prepared statement.

When police arrived at the scene, Officer Joseph Van Pelt, the investigating officer, found that a blue Chevy Cavalier had been struck by a Ford F-350 Econo Line box truck. Both vehicles were stopped against a utility pole which had snapped in half and had come to rest on the top of the box truck, police said.

"Further investigation revealed that the driver of the Chevy, who was identified as Digiamo, was trapped inside the vehicle," police said.

At that time the Holmdel First Aid Squad and MONOC Paramedics arrived on scene and extricated Digiamo from the vehicle, police said.

Digiamo was than airlifted by the State Police Medivac Unit from nearby Cross Farm Park to Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, for evaluation, police said.

Dillon, the driver of the F-350, had been traveling on County Road 520 eastbound as Digiamo’s vehicle attempted to drive across County Road 520 and the vehicles than collided in the intersection, police said.

Both Dillon, the owner of Seamless Gutters of Point Pleasant, and Ray, were treated at the scene by Holmdel First Aid and released, police said.

At the accident scene, Dillon said that he had been on his way to a job in Port Monmouth. He said that the young driver in the blue car may not have noticed his vehicle because there were six or seven cars paused at the intersection on Route 520, waiting to make a left onto Middletown Road.

In an attempt to prevent the accident he saw coming, "I jumped on the brake with both feet," he said.

Dillon said he and Ray called 911 and stayed with the young woman until First Aid arrived, telling her to stay calm and that help was on the way.

About an hour after the accident, he said his heart was still racing. "I just hope the girl is okay," said Dillon, the father of three children.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene and Digiamo was issued a summons for failure to yield to traffic, police said.

JCP&L and Verizon responded to the scene where they replaced the utility pole.
