UPDATE: 'Unattended Death' on Route 88 in Brick, near Point

Death under investigation by Ocean County and Brick police.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Brick Police are investigating an "unattended death" that occurred Saturday morning in one of the Tip Top Cabin efficiency units on Route 88 in Brick, just west of the Point Borough border.

Ocean County Assistant Prosecutor Michel Paulhus said the body was located at 2214 Route 88. He said the investigation into the death is in the "preliminary stages."

An autopsy was conducted early Sunday afternoon. According to Paulhus, the manner and cause of death remain unknown, pending results of toxicology tests. He did not speculate as to the cause of death.

The crime scene at a series of white cabins on Route 88 was cordoned off with yellow police tape and Brick police and the county Criminalistics Investigation Unit vehicles were parked there on Saturday evening.

By Sunday morning, only one police car was still stationed outside the cabin that was apparently the scene of the death and the yellow police tape was still up around it.

When police use the term "unattended death," they mean a person apparently died alone without anyone with them to observe exactly how, when or why it occurred. Because police have no immediate, first-hand information regarding the death, they have to investigate.
