Point Boro, Point Beach Share Mayors' Basketball Trophy

Teams from the boroughs' recreation basketball programs play each other at Ocean Road

Point Borough and Point Beach middle schoolers went toe to toe on the court Monday night at Ocean Road Elementary School.

Seventh and eighth grade girls and boys from the two boroughs' Recreation Departments played each other, with both of their mayors watching, from about 7 to 9:30 p.m.

First, Point Borough girls beat the Beach team 22 to 19, compelling Point Beach Mayor Vincent Barrella to hand the trophy to Point Borough Mayor William Schroeder.

Then Beach boys beat Borough 58 to 47, so Schroeder handed back the trophy to Barrella.

That was the last game of the Beach recreation basketball league's season, prompting Barrella to award Glenn Krieger with a basketball covered in autographs from the children that played on the league.

Krieger had organized the league as a volunteer on the Point Beach Recreation Department, but he is now leaving Recreation, so the committee wanted to honor him on Monday night, his last night, said Recreation official Glen Paesano.

"The ball was a token of gratitude from the fellow members of the recreation committee," Paesano said.
