Point Boro Honors Veterans Today

Point Boro has Memorial Day event at Community Park

Patch is re-publishing this story as a reminder to the greater Point Borough community that the town is observing Memorial Day with a ceremony today and all are welcome.

The Mayor and Council of Point Pleasant Borough are sponsoring their 11th Annual Memorial Celebration in Community Park, Bridge Ave, at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The program consists of student Gracie Enright singing the National Anthem, Pastor Tate of Life Chapel Church saying the invocation, Nellie Bennett Elementary School’s Fifth Grade Chorus singing, under the direction of teacher Kelly McCann, and the Point Pleasant Panther High School Band performing.

There will also be a presentation of the 2012 Grand Marshal, Charlie Hagen, a Korean War Veteran and Point Pleasant resident, speaker John Dorrity, a Vietnam Veteran and Director of the Ocean County Veterans Bureau in Toms River, acknowledgment of past grand marshals in attendance, color guard, taps and a wreath-laying ceremony.

Will this be another year without a parade in the Boro? I spent Friday teaching my students all about Memorial Day. Last year I truly missed seeing the veterans driving through the streets to be honored. I will be at the park, but I will certainly miss the parade. I hope other people feel the same way and the parade returns.
