Corbally Notifies County He Won't Run in November

Cavagnaro says he and Democrats have agreed that he will run with Tom Davis

Michael Corbally, who resigned suddenly in mid-June as a Point Beach councilman, notified Ocean County on Wednesday morning that he will not run to try to reclaim the seat in the November general election.

Corbally is notifying the county so that his name will be removed from the ballot.

And Dave Cavagnaro, who was appointed to fill Corbally's unexpired term,  said on Wednesday morning that he and Tom Davis have agreed to run together as Democrats for the two, three-year council seats.

In an email, Cavagnaro wrote: "I wanted you to know that last night I spoke to Tom Davis after the meeting. I offered to be his running mate and he accepted. John Morrongiello (Democratic Club president) was there so he knows also.

"The Democratic Club will have final say on the ticket. I think between Tom and I, there's an excellent combination of life experience, community service, and knowledge of the town that will serve the residents, businesses and property owners well.

Corbally, a Lake Terrace resident, wrote the following note to Cheryl Hopkins, a county elections official:

"Hi Cheryl,

Please remove my name from the November 2013 Ballot in Point Pleasant Beach. I was a candidate for Council in Point Pleasant Beach on the Democratic Line.

Michael Corbally"

Corbally said he emailed Hopkins at the Elections Services division of the county clerk's office and is following up by sending a letter with his signature. He said he is supporting Cavagnaro and Davis in November.

"I'm very excited about the Davis-Cavagnaro ticket," he said.

Former Point Beach Mayor Tom Vogel and newcomer Tom Toohey are running as Republicans for the two seats.

Corbally had resigned the day after he learned that Superior Court Judge Vincent Grasso had ruled that the town's parking plan should cease because, in the judge's opinion, Corbally had a conflict of interest voting for the plan to go into effect in District 4 because he is a Realtor there (see hyperlink above for full story on resignation).

Since then, the council has voted to re-establish the parking plan in most of District 4 and a small section of District 3.
