Council 'Dust Up' Leads to Public Apology

Argument started over planned concert.

A "dust up" between councilmen in Point Borough led to a public apology this week at the regular Council meeting.

Councilman Chris Leitner said he was "sorry for that display," discussing a loud argument that he had at a Council meeting earlier this month with Republican Councilmembers Bill Borowsky and Bob Sabosik.

The argument started over a plan to have an Oct. 20 concert at Community Park. The argument began as partisan bickering crescendoed into yelling and then cursing. During the meeting, the four Republican council members, who hold a narrow majority on council, voted against authorizing the concert, which is actually a rain date for a concert canceled by thunderstorms in mid-July.

After his apology, Leitner said that other towns like Asbury Park and Red Bank draw visitors throughout the year with music events, and that events like these "bolster value to the town."

He said he hoped to see the Recreation Committee to convene a steering committee on the issue, to discuss the costs versus value of holding more concerts like these in the future.

The Borough has had several concerts featuring live bands and a beer and wine garden during the summer and early fall at Riverfront Park on River Road and Community Park.
