Council Holding Special Meeting on Possible Water-Sewer Rate Hike

Hike described as a 'blended 6%.'

Borough officials are planning a special meeting to discuss a possible "blended 6%" hike in water and sewer rates and charges for residents, after tabling the introduction of an amended sewer and water rate increase.

Council member John Wisniewski said at the Council meeting on Monday that he felt the hike was still "too aggressive," and that he is continuing to look at the numbers.

Council officials tables introducing the ordinance because several said they did not have time to review the proposal by the time the meeting occurred on Tuesday night.

Water and sewer customers in Point Borough are currently paying a water sewer surcharge, which was continued from last year.

The surcharge will reduce a $900,000 shortfall in the water and sewer budget by about $300,000, Borough Business Administrator Dave Maffei has said in past interviews.

Wisnewski has been working on addressing the shortage with a blended calculation, which would raise the ready to serve charge while reducing the actual rate. Some Council members are concerned that because the ready to serve charge is not correct, it is going to continue to lead to a shortage.

The date of the special meeting has not yet been scheduled.
