NRC Reports Brief 'Unusual Event' At Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant

No adverse effects on site or off-site, NRC spokesman says

Operators at the Oyster Creek Generating Station off Route 9 in Lacey Township declared an "unusual event" today due to a chlorine leak a the site, a federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman said.

The small line from which the chlorine was leaking was quickly isolated and the unusual event - rated the lowest on the NRC's levels of emergency classification - ended at 11:40 a.m., little more than an hour after it was declared, said NRC spokesman Neil A. Sheehan.

"There were no injuries or other adverse impacts on-site and the event had no off-site impacts," he said.

Exelon - the plant's owner - will have to excavate the line and repair it, Sheehan said.

"The exact amount that leaked is still being quantified, but is preliminary believed to be a small amount," he said. "The leak occurred near the plant’s water intakes, where water is pumped from the intake canal for cooling purposes at the plant."

The chlorine is injected into a larger line used to provide cooling water for certain plant systems. The chlorine is used to kill material such as as algae, Sheehan said.

@leo. The road needs to be built as part of the township evacuation plan. But glad to see you finally endorsing the building of the road.
