Point Beach: Do Not Put Home Renovation Debris at Curb

Home renovation debris should not be put at the curb because the town will not be reimbursed by FEMA for disposing of that type of refuse, according to Point Beach officials.

"Notification received from DEP (state Department of Environmental Protection) states that non-storm related waste, such as home renovation scraps and materials, is not considered 'debris' and therefore is not eligible for FEMA reimbursement," says a prepared statement from Point Beach Business Administrator Christine Riehl.

"In order to recoup maximum dollars for all our residents, it is very important that you do not place these materials out to the curb for collection."

Residents have to get dumpsters for home repair and renovation trash, Riehl said.

Dec. 9 Deadline to Put Storm-Related Debris at Curb

"In light of this information, the final day to place storm-related debris out to the curb will be Dec. 9. After Dec. 9, you will be responsible to dispose of your debris privately," the statement to property owners says.

"If you have not visited your home or placed your storm-related debris to the curb, we strongly recommend you do so before the 9th so you do not jeopardize your opportunity to take advantage of this service free of charge."

Residents can still put regular household trash and recycling at the curb. Collection schedules for both of those have been back to normal.

Brush Collection

As of Dec. 31, brush collection will return back to the regular procedure. Branches bundled in lengths of five feet or less will be picked up by appointment only. Call 732-899-0705.

Paint Cans

Paint cans cannot be placed curbside for pickup. They must be dropped off at the Department of Public Works, Cooks Road, on a dead end behind the NJ Transit train station. Substances other than latex paint can be disposed of through the Ocean County hazardous waste program.

There are currently two scheduled drop offs, one at Toms River Recycling Center, Church Road, on Dec. 8 and one at Brick Township High School, Chambers Bridge Road, Dec. 15. To register for the Toms River location, call 732-567-0802. To register for the Brick location, call 732-506-5047.

Electronics

Electronics or E-waste that was damaged in the storm may either be placed out to the curb for pick-up or dropped off at Public Works.

Building Department

"It is highly recommended that all floodwater-soaked building elements such as wallboard, insulation, trim and flooring be removed. The exposed areas of wood need to be dried. Then sterilize all affected areas prior to the replacement of new material."

All floodwater damaged electrical equipment including switches, outlets, breakers and other devices MUST be replaced.

The Building Department will be open from 8 a.m until noon Sat.
