Point Beach Non-Binding Parking Referendum Fails

Question asked if parking should be restricted overnight to residents and taxpayers

A non-binding referendum to restrict overnight parking in Point Beach narrowly failed by a vote of 795 to 728.

The referendum was a way to gauge public opinion, but does not require the mayor and council to drop the idea of imposing parking restrictions. The governing body could still establish an overnight parking restriction, could modify the proposal or could do nothing.

The proposal calls for local households to each get five, free parking passes to allow them to park on residential streets from midnight to 8 a.m.

Those without passes would not be able to park on residential streets during those hours.

The idea is that visitors will park in lots or at meters and not on residential streets to avoid getting tickets.

It remains to be seen whether the present council, will decide to impose any parking restrictions.

Councilman Michael Corbally had proposed the referendum in response to numerous complaints from residents in District 4, near the beach and busy boardwalk area, that day trippers and bar patrons were causing disruptions as they walked to their parked cars on residential streets all summer.

The proposal for the referendum barely passed council and has been highly controversial, with opponents saying it would inconvenience boardwalk customers and employees and may unfairly limit the number of guests residents can have visiting at their homes.

The unfortunate thing is that St.Peter's Church was misinformed and therefore made an announcement at Church and sent an email out with misinformation to the Parish members..I couldn't believe that people would stoop THAT LOW but apparantly they have. Parishioners were made to Believe that they would be voting against their Church if they voted yes...I thought I have seen it all until this election. The referendum was simply an opinion poll. The only Mass it would have affected(if it even came into reality) was the new 7:30 am Mass and only if the 2 parking lots they have were filled and out of town residents couldn't find parking on the street...Again,Politics shows no mercy but this year, bringing the Church into it goes beyond all boundaries!!!!

I will be the first one to say that we have to abide by what the people want but those people involved with the lies,(and we all know who was behind this),should truly be ashamed of themselves. It has nothing to do with the parking plan not passing,it has everything to do with how far you are willing to go.......You have proved how far you were willing to go and in the end you still lost!!!!Was it worth it???

It would NEVER have been enforced anywhere but in the squeaky wheel district anyhow.

Who cares, it was just an opinion survey, nothing more. St. Peters should have never been asked to get involved. They put false misinformation out to the parishioners. This would have not affected they're parking for their church. They still can come up with a parking plan being it was only an opinion...... Shame on the church for getting involved.

Amen.

The patch should have posted the results of each district.
There should be no politics from the pulpit. Separation of church and state? Mercy, mercy, me! Since the referendum passed muster in district 4 maybe the plan should just be applied their.

And assess the cost of instituting and enforcing it ONLY to the residents of Squeaky Wheel Central.

Beach_N8iv,
Please just stop it with the squeaky wheel, you don't know how foolish you sound...

Couldn't be worse than YOUR endless whining.

Your election shows no mandate. . .you had a split vote. . .half of your residents voted against Barrella. . .politically there is no direction being ascertained. . .other than the referendum vote. . .which you and others here. . . don't want to accept?
...Now you're blaming the church! Your a sore loser there. . .
Cathy Kelly November 10, 2011 at 09:55 pm
Spooner, once again, get your facts straight.I NEVER blamed the Church. I blame the ones who fed the misimformation to the Church....
blindbert November 10, 2011 at 10:43 pm
Other churchs have been threatened by the IRS for endorsing issues and or candidates
The Irs said it may revoke Tax free status. This sounds like what we have here.
Spooner November 11, 2011 at 03:13 am
MsKelly...this was what you said: "The unfortunate thing is that St.Peter's Church was misinformed and therefore made an announcement at Church and sent an email out with misinformation to the Parish members"
The "Church" is it's parishioners. . .members I would think. . . bought the parking referendum to the attention of the church leaders. . .and they formulated and disseminated the information. . .Were they misinformed. . .that's your opinion(misinformed). . .not a "fact" ...and according to 'blindbert'. . . District 4, was the only district to vote for it. . .so I guess. . . maybe the Mayor, Tooker, and Corbally should consider holding town hall meetings there?
Spooner November 11, 2011 at 03:22 am
@blindbert: are you look to advocate restricting parishioners from practicing or hindering their right to freely assemble and part take in their religious beliefs. . .while your citing IRS tax free status issues. . .Love to see the Church take on the town over that. . .I'm sure you'll be right up there with the dinero's for the town's lawyers?
Cathy Kelly November 11, 2011 at 03:31 am
Spooner, the misinformation that the Church received is being looked into. Just because the election is over does not mean that the residents are letting it go. The residents are going to find out EXACTLY what was told to the Church and the people that have lied and misinformed will be exposed....When that happens I hope that you and the others will step up and admit what was done....
Spooner November 11, 2011 at 04:26 am
Ms Kelly: putting parking restrictions around St Peters is not a good idea. . .Period! People from other towns and tourists part take in church activities? Putting in parking restrictions. . . is an attempt to hinder their rights of freedom to practice their religion and participate in social gatherings. . .in their eyes. . .Their parking lot cannot accommodate all the cars?
Cathy Kelly November 11, 2011 at 05:15 am
Spooner, can you tell me what the question on the ballot was?
Cathy Kelly November 11, 2011 at 05:17 am
as I stated in my above post, the residents are looking into what was told to the Church. If you have no involvement in that than you should not be worried but trust me the truth WILL come out.....

LOCAL QUESTION NO. 1
Shall the Governing Body of the Borough of Point Pleasant Beach institute by the appropriate action regulations limiting parking on public streets to residents and taxpayers of the Borough of Point Pleasant Beach?
pointman November 11, 2011 at 06:40 pm
Every one needs to look at Spooner response. Look at what the question is before you start with the 12 to 8 limit. The question clearly does not state those hours. This question could mean anything and any times. And this is not just about St Peters, limited parking can effect school, stores ect. Maybe if it was explained better, maybe if there was some more public input before it was rushed, and maybe if it wasnt brought up for a political edge in a campaign people would have understood what the question actually meant. Again look at the question ,it says limiting parking to PPB people only. I'm not surprised more churches, and businesses didnt come out against it. Maybe they did but didnt use the internet. A poorly written question and lack of knowledge by the residents cause this confusion.

I doubt it. People love to complain :) Myself included I suppose.
Happy Point Beacher June 19, 2013 at 01:37 pm
Too bad. I don't complain where it will do no good. I do complain when it can change things for theRead More better. Don't waste your time or be negative.
