Point Boro Trash Collection Weekly During Summer

Past practice of twice-weekly summer pick-up ended with last contract

Point Borough residents are reminded that trash will be picked up weekly during the summer, according to the terms of a new contract.

The reminder, as well as information about trash collection holidays and when trash is collected those weeks, is on the Department of Public Works page of the Borough web site.

The recycling schedule remains the same all year.

I think the town left this important item out when they announced the new "cheaper" contract

If you click on the first hyperlink, you will see the council members did talk about how summer collection would be only weekly. There had also been previous discussions about it and previous stories reporting that it was being considered.

more of the same.....less for more.
Christopher Goss June 04, 2012 at 02:30 PM
It's the same tonnage for less money. Inconvenient for some maybe, but we have six in our home and do just fine. Hopefully this will encourage more vigilant recycling which returns money to the borough.

I think its a great start in saving money. I wish that more rsidents understood how.much more could be saved by recycling even.more. I dont.think the residents fully understand the cost savings for.the town that reaults in recycling.
Debra Gallagher June 04, 2012 at 05:02 PM
However, I hope all the trash and the recycling lands in the trucks and not the streets. I don't know why, but on my street I need to go out and pick up after they have been here. If they are taking out their frustrations on the residents by doing this on purpose, it is not my fault what type of contract the received, but I am very sorry for them.

So only 1 garbage pick up per week? More people at the shore during summer time equals more garbage. I can not imagine how it is going to smell at the shore this summer. I think it is a bad idea to reduce during summer
Chris Constantino June 04, 2012 at 07:41 PM
This was throughly discussed at the meetings and in the articles.
Chris Constantino June 04, 2012 at 07:42 PM
Same volume as always for less money.
Chris Constantino June 04, 2012 at 07:57 PM
Aggressive individual recycling efforts, proper garbage disposal and the occasional cleaning of refuse and recycling containers should result in more credit for recyclable materials, less tonnage to the landfills (hence, less $$ paid for the tonnage) and should minimize or dare I say, lessen any 'stink' from the trash. Saving over $500K this year is well worth the extra 30 to 60 minutes it may take over the entire summer to properly clean my cans and sort out my garbage...well, I already do that..;)

Looks like I'll have to be extra diligent in catching the criminals that illegally dump their construction debris on our dumpsters every week. We're full to the brim with two weekly pickups as it is. And yes, we contract with the boro for pickup, so we are going down to once per week as well. I'm seriously considering setting up a camera to film these guys during the day. Last week our dumpster was half filled with railroad ties. Nice new ones, too.

more people-more garbage- heat and you have a problem. I can understand one pickup from Sept to May but not for summer- We are going to have a problem with cats, rodents, and you will see people leaving garbage at the curb on ocean avenue-Just like everything else in this town-no consideration for anyone near the beach done in the middle of the winter----by the way I clean and recycle and sort my garbage too:)
Christopher Goss June 05, 2012 at 12:32 AM
This is in reference to the Borough's collection, not the Beach who certainly has more demanding collection considerations.
Laura June 05, 2012 at 12:42 AM
This is for the Boro not the Beach.

My mistake I am confused I thought this was for pt pleasant beach , confusing the way I read itn

Chris, sure its a contract for less money, but am I going to see a savings on my tax bill?...of course not. Any savings will go into the general fund, and pay for something else, and the tax bill will just keep rising each year. So that is what I mean by LESS, one pick-up a week in summer, now most likely gone forever, FOR MORE, an ever rising tax bill....

I don't know who thought it would be a good idea to have trash pick up once a week....we had a huge graduation party on Saturday and the trash has been sitting in the heat all week....now it smells so bad and has maggots. Under old contracts this garbage would have been picked up on the Monday. Ridiculous!
Chris Constantino June 23, 2012 at 02:54 AM
Really? Ridiculous? Did you put the garbage in bags?...from the beginning? Did you tie the bags up?....immediately? Were the cans dirty to begin with? All valid questions... The town saving over $400k for the duration of the contract is well worth the "inconvenience" of once a week garbage.
Chris Constantino July 01, 2012 at 05:50 PM
May I suggest cleaning the cans occasionally...and placing the trash in bags and not directly in the cans, if you haven't done so...can I also suggest sprinkling baking soda in the bags before you TIE them up...I would also suggest getting new cans if you existing cans are all broken up... If simple preventative measures aren't taken, regardless of once a week or twice a week pickups, your garbage is going to smell and probably get maggots...
Suzy Q July 02, 2012 at 01:47 AM
Don't u have anything better to do than council people on garbage. Lol. Duh who doesn't put their garbage in bags before they go in the cans.
Chris Constantino July 02, 2012 at 01:53 PM
Don't you have anything better to do than to complain about your maggots and how many times a week your garbage is picked up? Believe me, I wish I unchecked the " Notify me by email box when people comment" on this article. By the way, the word is counsel. Duh....
