Storm Debris Pick-Up Will End On January 16

Residents given an extra two weeks to dispose of Sandy-damaged items

Township officials have extended the final Superstorm Sandy debris pick-up date until Jan. 16 throughout Berkeley, Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said.

They had originally planned to cut off pick-up on Dec. 31 to all sections but South Seaside Park and Pelican Island, but two more Nor'easters hit the Jersey Shore.

"In light of the recent storms, I'm open to suggestions," Township Council President James J. Brynes said at a recent council meeting. "We really need to have a stop date so we can get reimbursement from FEMA."

"I'd personally go along with another two weeks," Township Councilman Thomas Grosse said.

There will be no set schedule for Christmas tree pick-up, but the public works department will be picking them up, according to the township's website.

Residents who want to dispose of their trees now can either bring them to the township recycling center off Pinewald-Keswick Road or drop them off at Cattus Island County Park in off Fischer Boulevard in Toms River. The discarded trees will be used to replenish storm-battered dunes at Island Beach State Park.

The public can follow the signs at Cattus Island to the drop-off location near the maintenance road. Cattus Island can be reached at 732-270-2703 for any questions. They will be accepting the trees until January 13.

Both Brynes and Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. also cautioned residents to make sure they have the proper permits from the township before proceeding with home improvements.

"If you are closing up a wall with sheetrock and you don't have a permit, you have a problem," Byrnes said.

Inasmuch as no one on Good Luck Point has received a dime, this date is preposterous because it will take equipment to move some very heavy stuff to the theoretical curbs out here. The only help we have received in picking up is the hours volunteered by the members of the amazing Berkeley Shores Homeowners' Association who brought along folks from various Ocean County Senior Softball teams. Oh, and we had a FEMA crew from Kansas here and they cleared away one house that wasn't on the curb and one pile that was & left. The town will not pick up anything but tidy stuff planted at that invisible curb line and so the hours that volunteers and residents have spent on incorrectly placing heavy things in particular will go uncollected because neither Fema nor the volunteers or I knew about the curb placement requirement and without equipment this can't be done by January 16th of 2014. We also couldn't even get brown trash can pick up for at least three weeks because the town denied it to us. Meanwhile, the mailman in a much lower truck was showing up! Several of us rented dumpsters and after six weeks my husband and I realized we just couldn't afford to keep renting it forever. So I am going at it an inch at a time and will have to Hefty bag things that might actually fit in them but at the very end of the lighter duty clean up, Our area's tab for Fema-related expenses has been extremely low because we haven't received much of anything, alas. It's DIY time here.
