TELL US: No Mail Delivery on Saturday: Does That Matter to You?

To save money, the US Postal Service is seeking to end mail delivery of letters on Saturday. Do you support this idea?

The financially-troubled US Postal Service announced Wednesday that in order to save $2 billion annually, it would seek to end the traditional delivery of the Saturday mail beginning in August.

Packages would still be delivered. Mail addressed to PO Boxes will still be delivered on Saturdays. Post Offices currently open on Saturdays will remain open on Saturdays.

But advertisements, bills and birthday cards destined for street addresses would be held until Monday.

The reasons are continued economic struggles and the increasing use of the Internet for communications and bill paying by consumers. The U.S. Postal Service is also the only federal agency required to pre-fund health benefits for retirees, and the costs are escalating quickly.

What do you think?

The rates keep going up and the service keeps going down. What will they do next, stop delivering on Wednesdays. It seems that the trend in government is the McDonalds Hamburger Model.... take as much money from us while delivering the cheapest tolerable product in return. Its not just the post office, its all of our government. Perhaps, some of these functions should just be privatized since they cannot run them efficiently or properly?

What's the difference if they go from six days to five? They can't get my mail to me on time as it is, and customer service, go to the Point Boro office some time. They act like they're doing you a huge favor serving you! Privatize it, couldn't be any worse!

Now if we can only suspend phone service on weekends it really will be peaceful...Actually I have a "who cares attitude" about the mail not being delivered on Saturday....Perhaps we could deliver it on Monday Wednesday and Friday only and decrease the annoyance of surplus communications.

I think mail deliveries could be reduced to 3 days a week.. Mon Wed Friday. Prior to the extensive use of the Internet, wire transfers, paying bills online, direct deposit etc. More mail deliveries were needed. No more.

I think it's a great idea. It's not going to hurt us to mail out that birthday card one day sooner so it arrives on time. If it'll help put finances in order for the USPS, then I'm all for them taking a proactive approach to solving the issue. For the amount of mail handled around the country on a daily basis, I think the USPS does a pretty good job. No reason those who need their Netflicks or whatever for the weekend, can't order them to arrive on Fridays instead of Saturdays. I say it's a good decision.

I'm lucky if I even get my mail. Half the time it is lost, damaged, or belongs to my neighbor. When I go to the post office to pick up packages the line is out the door and the employees look worn out. I've also had my delivery driver lie on a priority package and say they attempted delivery but no one was home. This wasn't the case as I was home all day and even took the other mail from the driver by hand. I won't get into the packages they leave on my uncovered doorstep in a rain storm without a plastic bag.

I haven't gone to the PPBoro Post Office in years.....They are good for only one thing, creating a long line of customers. I will go to Bay Head or Allenwood before I go to the Boro.....

Thanks a lot, MTBottle, now everyone will go there!

HOORAY! One less day of junk mail! Wonder what would happen to USPS if there was no junk mail.

The Postal Service is a vast, ridiculously inefficient welfare project for otherwise unemployable people. A vast fleet of trucks burns millions of gallons of fuel to deliver dead trees to nearly every home and business in the country, which are then promptly thrown into recycling bins and hauled away by another fleet of trucks. Stop the madness already. Shut it down, sell off the assets, liquidate the pensions, and send all those little worker drones home to watch TV and collect food stamps.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday would be more than sufficient for mail delivery. Like most of what the Government runs.....it's inefficient and bloated with useless expenses.

Point Pleasant beach by the RR tracks is much better when you need to go to a post office

The Post Office should be privatized. Pass an Amendent to the Constitution and allow private businesses to deliver the mail. It was a bad idea to make this a function of the government in the first place. Just like any pension heavy animal, eventually it will fall on its face.

Robert, They should privatize the public schools and police departments too.

I think the P. O. should keep delivering mail on Saturday..Pony Express ran through hail, sleet, rain, snow every day of the week.. Our debtors are expecting our payments on time and will charge us late fees if they are late. If the money was skilled budgeted the P. O. shouldn't had an problem...you keep going up with the postage but no change in the delivery. Sounds just like the government, keep taking our money, giving raises and the people has no better service.
