John C. Amelchenko, founding partner of Aquatecture Associates, a successful architectural firm, has worked to help build the firm into one of the most respected in the local area.

“Almo” as he is know to his fellow 1974 classmates excelled academically while attending Point Pleasant Beach High School, earning National Honor Society recognition in both his junior and senior years in high school. He was also selected to represent his high school at the 1974 American Legion Boys State program.

In addition to his success in the classroom, John, also participated in many co-curricular activities. John represented the Garnet Gulls in the athletic arena playing three years of football, basketball, and golf.

His desire to lead was apparent even back in his high school days leading his classmates as an active member of the Student Council for three years including his senior year.

After graduating Point Pleasant Beach High School in 1974, John entered the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree and the Henry Adams AIA Certificate of Merit graduating second in his class at NJIT in 1983.

In 1984, John connected with friend and fellow architect Greg Cox and together they opened Aquatecture Associates Incorporated. Aquatecture has designed and developed a large number of projects diverse in scope, use and scale.

Many of the Aquatecture projects have gained recognition and have been included in publications such as Coastal Living, Design New Jersey, Builder/Architect, Green Builder and Dream Homes of New Jersey. Aquatecture, headquartered in Point Pleasant Beach, occupies a restored 85-year old firehouse building.

Mr. Amelchenko and his partner designed and managed the rehabilitation of the space, turning the early 1900’s building into a state of the art facility on the inside while maintaining the building's character and restoring it to what it looked like when it originally placed its mark on history as Ocean County Firehouse #1. Thanks to the hard work of John and his partner the firm has received many city and state awards for the remarkable job they did on the restoration project.

In 1987 John became a registered architect with the State of New Jersey and in 2009 he earned his Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accreditation. He has earned awards for his work from the Ocean County Historical Society, the Point Pleasant Beach Historical Society, the Philadelphia Business Journal and the NJ Builders Association.

In addition to dedicating himself to building a successful business John also gives back to his community. John is a Past President of the Point Pleasant Beach Rotary Club. As President, John successfully led the Rotarians raising money to support an array of worthy causes both nationally and locally.

John has also worked to help maintain the prominence of the Point Pleasant Beach School District, volunteering much of his time filling four consecutive terms as an elected member of the Board of Education starting with the 1992-1993 school year.

John served as a member of the Board of Education’s Athletic Committee and Board of Education Liaison to the Public Education Foundation.

He was appointed President of the Board of Education three times and Vice President once. Former Superintendent of Schools, Dr. F. Thomas Crawley, noted that John’s professional expertise proved very valuable as the Board of Education worked during John’s tenure designing two multimillion-dollar renovation projects that led to updating both the high school and elementary school.

In addition to John’s work on the school board, he has also coached community youth in a variety of sports including recreation basketball and little league baseball.
John is a loving husband to his wife Rae and they have three wonderful children John Gregory, PPBHS Class of 2002, Adam Christopher, PPBHS Class of 2004 and Christina Joyce, PPBHS Class of 2007.

The Point Pleasant Beach Public Education Foundation wishes to congratulate John C. Amelchenko, Point Pleasant Beach High School Class of 1974, on his success as a local architect and construction planner and thank him for his years of dedicated service to the Point Pleasant Beach Board of Education and his commitment to the children of the Point Pleasant Beach community.
