If you want to find out what hope sounds like, go to Point Beach High School Media Center from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The Point Beach High School Band students, and the Rodrigos, featuring high school alumni, will perform in “Hope for the New Year: An Evening of Music and Dessert for our Community!”

The musical artists will perform in the media center, on the high school's third floor, as audience members enjoy coffee, tea and delectable desserts provided by high school band parents.

Admission and refreshments are free. However, the band students and their families are asking the community to make donations at the dessert table to the Point Pleasant Beach High School Music Parents' Assocation, a 501C3 non-profit, all-volunteer organization which supports the PPBHS music department and music students. Checks can be made out to: PPBHS Music Parents’ Association.

The event is an attempt to compensate for two disappointing downturns in recent fundraising efforts.

First, Super Storm Sandy forced the Parents Association to cancel its Annual Election Night Spaghetti Dinner previously scheduled for Nov. 6 and holiday wreath sales were down by 75 percent, leaving the association $8,000 behind its projected fundraising goal.

"Besides being our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Spaghetti Dinner was also an evening where the community could gather and listen to the high school music students showcase their musical talent and express their individuality in a more relaxed venue," said a prepared association statement.

"Our students had been working on their musical acts to perform for the night of the Spaghetti Dinner and did not have the opportunity, thanks to Sandy, so we wanted to recreate the dessert and entertainment portion of the event for everyone to enjoy."

Editor's Note: Please note the location of the event is a change of venue announced on Monday.
