Now is the Time to Make a Change, Says Point Boro H.S. Valedictorian

"This is your moment to make a change," Valedictorian Kristina Corso told her fellow graduates at Friday's night Point Borough High School graduation.

"It's important you do something that makes you happy," Corso said.

"I'm proud of our class," she said, noting that a large number of graduates have raised money for worthy causes, as well as had outstanding achievements in academics, the arts and athletics.

"I wouldn't be surprised if some of you wind up on Broadway, playing professional football or even on the moon."

Corso also thanked the teachers and staff for getting the graduates ready for the next phase of their lives.

To her fellow graduates, she said, "Congrats, guys. We made it."

Salutatorian Susan Eileen Walsh gave her fellow graduates some advice.

"Always stand up for what you believe in," she said.

"When I was in fifth grade at Nellie Bennett, they took away the bubble," she said, recalling how appalled her and her fellow fifth graders were when the giant climbing dome was removed from the elementary school playground.

"We stood on top of the playground equipment and yelled, 'No bubble,no peace,' " she remembered.

"Maybe that's why we didn't get recess in middle school," she added, getting a laugh from the large crowd.

She urged her fellow graduates to keep that same spirit alive even as they tackle more weighty issues than the loss of piece of climbing equipment.

"We need to keep standing up for our convictions," she said.

She also told the Class of 2011 to be proud of how far they've come, set realistic goals and accept life's challenges.

Class President Allison Marie DeLucia told her fellow graduates, "I have memories that I wouldn't trade for all the world. Remember that your capabilities are endless."

Before graduation started, Kenny Work, 18. was walking with his classmates from the high school auditorium towards the athletic field.

Work, 18, wearing light blue shades, said he's happy to be graduating.

He'll spend part of the summer at Teterboro Airport working on airplanes, like he did this past year through the Ocean County Vocational Technical School program.

His buddy next to him, Josh Woszczak, 18, was asked how he feels about graduating.

"I couldn't be happier," he said.
