The play is based on the diary of Anne Frank, who was in hiding in a secret annex when she was 14 and 15 years old with her family during World War II in Amsterdam. She hid with seven other people, most of whom were her family,  for two years before they were discovered by Nazis.

Her father was the only member of the family to ultimately survive the Nazi regime and he was instrumental in saving the house where he had secretly hid with his family. Today the canalside house is a museum where visitors can see the diary and the rooms where eight people hid during the Nazis' reign of terror.
