Point Boro Schools Offer Prizes for Summer Reading

A Nook and other prizes are possible prizes for the most avid readers

Monday, June 13th marked the official start of Point Pleasant Borough School’s Fourth Annual Summer Reading Program.

Made possible through a partnership between the district and the Point Pleasant Borough Branch of the Ocean County Library, the program promotes summer reading among district students, offers prizes for avid readers and encourages participation in themed activities at the library.

“Each year the Summer Reading Program focuses on a centralized theme and that theme is used to devise age-appropriate reading programs,” said Director of Curriculum and Instruction Robert Alfonse.

“This year’s primary theme is all about going global with the program One World, Many Stories for students entering grades one through six and You Are Here for students entering grades seven through twelve.”

“The top reader in each grade will win a prize and, once again, I am pleased to announce, thanks to the generosity of the Point Pleasant Foundation for Excellence in Education, one participant from each program will be randomly selected to receive a Barnes & Noble NOOK Color e-reader/tablet,” he continued.

Alfonse explained that reading logs have been distributed in school and are available through the Point Pleasant Borough Library.

Upon the completion of five age-level appropriate books students should submit logs to the library through the end of the program on August 13.

“At the program’s conclusion, all logs will be reviewed, the top readers will be determined and our grand prize winners will be selected,” he said. “The more cards a student submits, the greater their chance to win.”

“Summer break is a time when, statistically, children’s reading skills can falter,” said Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith.

“By participating in the Summer Reading Program, our students will experience increased retention throughout the summer months and improved academic performance during school time," Smith said.

"The district is very grateful to the Point Pleasant Borough Library, and the Point Pleasant Foundation for Excellence in Education for their continued support of the Summer Reading Program.”

All students who elect to participate in the program will be recognized in a school-based program, as well as by the school district and the community in a special recognition program in September.

All winners will be announced in September.
