Point Boro Schools Reduce Out-of-District Tuition Rates

Rates reduced by 40 to 50 percent

The Point Pleasant Borough Board of Education is sharply reducing out-of-district tuition rates for the coming school year to attract more non-resident students to attend borough schools and to generate more revenue for the local district, school officials said.

The reduction also is being made to be more competitive with out-of-district rates charged by nearby districts like Bay Head and Point Pleasant Beach, Board President Sean Hagan said on Saturday morning.

The board recently voted unanimously to reduce tuition rates for non-resident students to borough schools for the 2011-12 school year.

For grades first through fifth, the rate of $10,469 is reduced by more than 50 percent to $5,000.

For grades sixth through eighth, the rate of $11,165 would be reduced to $6,500, down more than 40 percent.

And the rate for high school would be reduced from $10,854 to $7,000.

Additionally, a 10 percent discount will be applied for each subsequent student attending a district school.

Hagan said the new rates are not as low as Bay Head's.

"We couldn't charge as low as their rates," Hagan said. "But our new rates are closer to rates charged by Bay Head and Point Pleasant Beach."

He did not have the other districts' rates immediately at his disposal on Saturday morning.

“The Point Pleasant Borough School District offers a comprehensive educational experience comprised of superior academic and co-curricular programming,” said Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith.

“Central Administration and the Board of Education agree that a Point Pleasant Borough Education should be more accessible for non-resident students," he said.

“High achievement in academics, athletics and performing arts is tradition in our schools,” said Smith. “I strongly encourage any parent or guardian interested in giving their child the benefits associated with a Point Pleasant Borough education to peruse their local newspaper or visit our district website for a glimpse of the many achievements and accolades occurring in our schools everyday.”

Applications for prospective students are available for download from the district website www.pointpleasant.k12.nj.us or by request by calling the Administrative Office at (732) 701-1900, Ext. 2418.

Tuition is paid monthly in advance.
