Point Boro's Stacy Scholarship Winners Starting College Soon

Four Point Borough High School graduates honored with scholarships from the Michael Stacy Memorial Scholarship Foundation are starting college in September.

All four honorees were members of the Borough High School Competition Band or its color guard and are starting college in September, which are among the requirements for recipients of the scholarships named in memoriam for the much-beloved band crew chief.

This year’s recipients are: Christopher Doblovsky, Carly Roncin, Geoffrey Thomulka, and Andrew Sutphen.

Christopher is from the band and Carly from the color guard. Each will receive a $2,500 scholarship award as the primary scholarship recipients, honored for their dedication, spirit and leadership qualities.

"Added this year is an award for extraordinary spirit and we are pleased to announce this year’s recipient of the Michael Stacy Memorial Spirit Award is Geoffrey Thomulka who will receive a $1,000 scholarship award," says a prepared statement from the foundation.

"We also added a special award for outstanding service to the Competition Band Crew, and are pleased to announce the first recipient of the Michael Stacy Memorial Crew Service Award is Andrew Sutphen who will receive a $500 scholarship award," the statement continues.

The foundation held its fourth annual Golf Outing and Dinner at Woodlake Country Club in Lakewood on May 13, which was attended by 68 golfers and about 150 supporters.

The event, made possible by sponsorships and donations from many local businesses and individuals, was successful in raising funds to award four scholarships this year and, as funds allow, to provide additional equipment that may be needed by the Borough High School Competition Band.

The memorial scholarship fund is dedicated to Michael Stacy, Crew Chief of the Point Pleasant High School Competition Band from 2007 until his passing in 2010.

"This fund was created in his name to support the students in the Point Pleasant Borough High School Competition Band program that exhibit the generosity of spirit that Michael always showed," the statement says.

"Through this event, each year a scholarship will be awarded to a color guard member and/or instrumentalist in the Competition Band who is a graduating senior and who best demonstrates the special spirit and leadership qualities reminiscent of Mr. Stacy’s commitment to the program.

"As Michael was an avid golfer, this outing was conceived as the primary fundraiser to support the scholarship fund in his memory."

This year’s recipients were also announced at the Borough High School Band Boosters banquet on May 20th and at the High School Award’s Night on June 6th.

"The Michael Stacy Memorial Scholarship Foundation wishes to thank all of the businesses, families and individuals who supported this event and looks forward to many more outings and the community support that makes them so successful.

"We anticipate that this will continue to be an annual event and will provide annual scholarships and funds to support the Point Pleasant Borough High School Competition Band students and programs whenever possible."
