Test Scores Drop Slightly in Point Pleasant Borough and Point Pleasant Beach

But graduation rate up slightly in Borough and Beach numbers still above state average, state report card shows

Point Pleasant Borough High School and Point Pleasant Beach High School saw most of its standardized test scores dip slightly since last year, according to the latest state report card.

However, the borough's graduation rate rose by about 3 percent from 95.2 to 98 percent, according to the report card released to the media on Tuesday.

The borough high school's total student population of 994 students is more than twice as large, or a difference of 589, than the beach high school of 405 students.

The borough high school saw Math and Verbal scores dip slightly during the 2009 to 2010 school year, compared to the 2008-2009 school year.

For example, its average SAT Math score dropped from 510 to 493.

Its average Verbal SAT score dropped from 510 to 491. Its average Essay score dropped from 496 to 483.

Regarding the HSPA test, the number of students scoring in the "partially proficient" category in Language Arts decreased from 5.6 percent to 4.8 percent.

The good news is that in the "proficient" category in Language Arts, the number increased from 72.4 to 78 percent.

However, the percentage dropped slightly in the "advanced proficient" category of Language Arts from 22 percent to 17 percent.

In HSPA Math, those scoring in the "partially proficient" category increased from 19.5 to 27.4 percent.

The number in "proficient" dropped from 61.5 to 56.7 percent and in "advanced" the number dropped from 19 to 15.9 percent.

In Point Pleasant Beach, the average SAT Math score dropped by a hair from 546 to 541, still above the state average of 520.

The average SAT Verbal score dropped from 520 to 517, above the state average of 497.

The average SAT essay score rose a point from 549 to 550, above the state average of 499.

The Beach's percentage of students continuing to a four-year college is 73.9, compared to the borough's rate of 49.1.

Regarding the HSPA's Language Arts section, the Beach saw 10 percent of students score in the "partially proficient" category, compared to 3.5 percent the prior school year.

In the "proficient" category, the percentage rose from 69 to 71.8 percent, but decreased in "advanced proficient" from 27.1 to 18.2 percent.

In the Math section of HSPA, the percentage in the "partially proficient" category increased from 12.9 to 19 percent.

In "proficient" the percentage stayed about the same, roughly at 60 percent, and the percentage dropped in the "advanced proficient" category from about 26 percent to 20 percent.
