Around The Point: Varsity Athletics Week in Review

BOYS VARSITY SOCCER:

For the Point Borough Boys Varsity Soccer team, it was a very good week on their quest for a winning season. The Panthers were 1-0-1 on the week, after a 2-2 tie against Lakewood, but a solid 2-1 victory over divisional foe Monsignor Donovan.

Larry Monaco and Colin Fixter scored at the end of the first half, which was the difference in the contest. 

Point Borough improved its record on the season to 3-5 and will try to make it two in a row on Saturday afternoon against another divisional rival in Jackson Liberty.

The Point Beach Soccer team had a very positive start to the week in a 7-2 victory over Asbury Park High School and tried to avenge its only loss of the season on Wednesday afternoon against Shore Regional High School.

Unfortunately for the Gulls, Shore Regional’s explosive offense was simply too much to handle in a 4-2 defeat. Kyle and Nick Kaifais scored the two goals for Point Beach in the defeat.

Although Point Beach was unable to knock off Shore Regional in either matchup this season, with a record of 5-2 the Gulls are still on pace to have a very solid 2011 campaign.

“If I had to grade our season currently, I’d give us a B+,” said Point Beach head coach Adam Curtis. “We’ve had some good wins, we’ve played well at times, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.”

GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER:

All season long, Mike Edolo, Point Borough Girls Varsity Soccer Head Coach, said that if the hard work continued, his varsity soccer team would finally see results. This week, the Point Borough Lady Panthers finally saw those positive results.

The Panthers easily disposed of Lakewood High School by the score of 5-0. The Lady Panthers also avenged its home opening loss to Monsignor Donovan by splitting the season series with a 3-2 victory.

The Panthers were led by the outstanding play of Claire Baxter who scored twice for the Panthers in the victory in Toms River.

“It was nice to avenge that loss from earlier in the season,” said Edolo. “We outplayed them the first time we played. So to go down and beat them on their home field is a nice feeling for the team.”

The Point Beach girls team was engaged in a hard fought battle with St. Rose High School earlier this week.

Unlike the first time they played, the Garnett Gulls were able to play a very closely-contested game with the Purple Roses. Morgan DeLuca set up Haley Ray twice for two goals, however it was not enough in a 3-2 defeat.

ON THE GRIDIRON…

While Point Borough was able to scratch and claw to their second straight victory over Jackson Liberty, the Point Beach football team was engaged in a battle against perennial divisional power Asbury Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Beach squad hung around, but was not enough as Asbury Park handed the Garnett Gulls their first loss of the season by the score of 24-8.

Defensive back Mark Jurkowski had a sensational day for the Gulls. Jurkowski hauled in three interceptions in the defeat.

Point Borough will try to improve its record to 3-1 on the season against Shore Conference powerhouse Wall High School on Friday night. Point Beach will look to improve to 2-1 on the season against Keansburg High School Saturday afternoon.
