The Point Pleasant Beach Boys Varsity Soccer team advanced to the Central Jersey Group 1 Final for the first time since 2007 after a resounding 5-2 victory of Highland Park High School on Tuesday afternoon.

“We realized that everything was on the line in the second half,” said Petrides. “It’s all or nothing at that point, and we haven’t won states in a long time. It’s something we want to do for all of our seniors, they’re a big reason why we’re here today.”

Point Beach also received a stellar effort from Nick Kaifais. Kaifais added a goal and an assist in the victory.

Point Beach will look to bring home the Central Jersey Group 1 title on Friday against Burlington City High School.

“I think we’re peaking at the right time,” said Point Beach head coach Adam Curtis. “We’re excited to be where we are, but we have one more mountain left to climb.”

Point Pleasant Borough Boys Varsity Soccer team fell in its opening round NJSIAA Tournament game to Red Bank Catholic by the score of 2-0.

Point Borough finished the season 10 and 11, but can hold their heads high after a solid run in this year’s Shore Conference Tournament.

On the Gridiron:

The New York Jets named Point Beach head coach John Wagner the High School Coach of the Week on Thursday. For his efforts, Wagner will receive $1,000 dollars to benefit the school’s program and will receive a certificate from the Jets.

The 6-2 Garnett Gulls, fresh off their first winning season in 14 years, will play their first playoff game in over a decade.

Point Beach is the 5 seed in the Group 1, Central New Jersey region and will take on New Egypt High School at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Point Pleasant Borough football team will also be starting its postseason quest on Friday night. The Panthers will ride a three game win streak into Barnegat to take on the Bengals, who will be hosting their first playoff game in school history.

Barnegat has won five out of its last six games and features a high-powered offensive attack led by quarterback Mark McCoy.

The Panthers will turn to its heavy rushing attack led by option quarterback John Dunbar to keep McCoy off the field.
