Annual VFW Flukin' Frenzy Fluke Tournament heads into 10th year


Family-friendly tournament to be held Saturday, August 18


The VFW Post 4715 Men's Auxiliary will once again host their Annual Fluke Tournament, set for August 18th.The tournament, which is in its 10th year, is a family-friendly event, encouraging the entire family to get involved for a fun day of fishing and picnicking.The proceeds will be used to provide scholarships to graduating seniors from Point Pleasant Beach and Point Pleasant Borough high schools.Over the past 10 years, this tournament has received outstanding support and recognition from anglers throughout the area as one of the most anticipated events of the year, with picnic that follows the day of fishing what makes this tournament special. Picnic food will be hot dogs, burgers, sausage, shrimp, clams, crabs, roast pig, corn, salads, soft drinks and beer. Music will be provided by the post DJ.This year, John Parker and his committee have been hard at work hoping to make this year*s event the biggest and best. Entries have been coming in at a record pace, and the committee hopes to have another successful tournament followed by a fun-filled picnic on the Post picnic grounds for the anglers and their families.The VFW Post is located at 603 St. Louis Avenue in Point Pleasant Beach.This year, the tournament will once again have three divisions, over-all, women's, and youth.The entry fee for the tournament is $55 per person. Entry fee includes a 2012 tournament T-shirt, a door prize ticket and one guest pass to the picnic.Anglers may fish from boats, docks, kayaks, canoes, jetties or beaches. If you don't have a boat, the charter fishing boat, The Gambler, has always been gracious to our entrants. Last year, the tournament attracted 150 entries all vying for $1250 top prize money to be awarded to the 1st place Over-all winner with the largest fluke by weight. The Women's Division winner will once again be awarded a custom Pink fishing pole, hand crafted by Kevin Bogan, valued at $300 and the name of the winner will be added to the pole by Kevin Bogan.There will also be a prize for the largest fluke caught by a youth, as well as for the largest fluke caught by an Post member  their name will be added to the Joe Sangine Award.The events will start the night before the fishing begins with a captain*s meeting on August 17th at 7pm, which must be attended by at least one member of each boat to receive the final rules, regulations and other information. Refreshments will be available for a nominal fee and cold beverages will be available for purchase.On Saturday, August 18th, the action starts at daybreak, when anglers can head out and begin fishing.The fishing winds down about mid-afternoon. In all divisions all fish must be weighed in at the Post weigh station by 4:30 p.m. SHARP!Meanwhile, back at the Post, members will be busy preparing a picnic for the anglers and their families which will begin at approximately 4 p.m.Food is served to all registered fishermen as part of their tournament entry fee, family,friends, and guests are welcome to participate for a minimal charge. Guest passes to the picnic are $30.00, with children under 10 free. Soda, cold beer will be on tap and other drinks will be available at the canteen.The business community in Point Pleasant, Point Pleasant Beach and the surrounding area has been generous every year in its support of the tournament. The VFW Men's Auxiliary welcomes any corporations or businesses that would like to become new sponsors. Prizes or service donations are always welcome to support the VFW Post and its Veteran's programs.
