Boro and Beach Girls Weekly Varsity Sports Roundup

Learning curve for Point Boro Girls Soccer continues while Point Beach Girls Soccer players get their groove back

The effort is there, the hustle is there, but, unfortunately, for the Point Borough Girls Soccer team, that hard work has yet to translate into a win this season.

On Monday afternoon, against the Toms River East High School team, the Panthers showed a lot of the same resiliency that they displayed against Monsignor Donovan High School only a week earlier.

The Panthers fell behind by three goals at halftime, but rallied to cut the deficit to 4-2 midway through the second half.

For the offense it was a sigh of relief to finally capitalize on scoring chances, which was something they were unable to do in the first half.

“We did some things well that we have been working on in practice over the last few days, but, unfortunately, when you give up soft goals it's difficult to dig yourself out of the hole,” said Point Borough head coach Mike Edolo. “It’s tough to keep putting yourself in two and three goal deficits and expect to win.”

The Panthers scored two beautiful goals in the second half, the first coming on a strike from Nicolette Kraus.

Point Borough scored their second goal of the afternoon, thanks to Emily Donohue, who was set up beautifully by a cross from midfielder Kerry Malleck.

“That second goal was excellent, those are the kind of things we’ve been working on all season,” said Edolo.

Point Borough has shown a knack for hanging in games, but in the opinion of the head coach, it is imperative that his team learns to get out of the gate quicker.

“We can’t keep falling behind early in games,” said Edolo. “It’s a big difference, mentally, to be behind one or two goals as opposed to being up one or two goals. Our girls are working hard, playing the game the right way and I know sooner or later the results will come.”

Meanwhile down the Beach, the Garnett Gulls soccer team has overcome their 0-3 start, with consecutive wins over Manchester Township High School and divisional foe Mater Dei.

In Tuesday’s win 4-1 victory over Mater Dei, Point Beach received a stellar effort from Morgan LaDuca. The sophomore scored two of the Point Beach goals and assisted on another.

Haley Ray and Nicole Meyer were responsible for the other two Point Beach tallies.

Up next for Point Beach a rematch with division rival St. Rose High School coming up on Tuesday. The Roses defeated Point Beach 3-0 in the season opener on Sept. 13.
