Point Beach Girls Tennis Faces Off Friday with Toms River North

Garnet Gulls, 10-3, to play at Bay Head Yacht Club on Friday

The Point Pleasant Beach girls' tennis team appears to be playing its best at the most important time of the season.

The Garnet Gulls (10-3) are coming off a 3-2 victory over Wall on Tuesday and a 5-0 triumph over Toms River East Wednesday.

Point Beach will host powerful Toms River North Friday at the Bay Head Yacht Club and should be more than ready for its Central Jersey Group I state tournament debut next Tuesday against South Amboy.

“We got the fourth seed in the state tourney, a bit lower than we hoped, but we are confident our actions will speak louder than seedings,’’ said Point Beach coach Kim Pellerito. “Our goal is to reach the NJSIAA Group I championships at Mercer County Park.

“The girls are surprising me,’’ she said. “Each match we have a different player stepping up and showing improvement. Our win against Wall was terrific. It was a boost our team needed.

“Point Beach has been unsuccessful over the past two years against Wall. It was great to get that win and it came in dramatic fashion -- a third-set victory at third singles to win.’’

Last weekend, Point Beach placed third in the Ocean County Tennis Tournament. The Gulls collected 22 points in the flight event and finished behind Toms River North (33 points) and Toms River South (27).  Point Beach won the county title in 2009.

Alexis Conner was second at No.2 singles in the OCT. Conner lost to Shannon Young of Toms River North 6-2, 6-3 in the final.

Point Beach received a third-place finish from Elizabeth Tell at No.1 singles and fourth-place finishes from Emily Watkins and Kylie Zusi at first doubles and Lauren Hajisafari and Jessica Magno at second doubles.
