Rampone Set to Play in New Professional Soccer League

Point Boro and Monmouth University star on Sky Blue FC roster

This spring, the new professional soccer league for women is set to kick off, and Point Borough High School alum Christie Rampone has been assigned to the local team.

Rampone, who has won Olympic gold medals and World Cup trophies, will bring her experience to the Sky Blue FC club which will play its games somewhere in the New York/New Jersey area.

The team will also include members of the Canadian and Mexican national teams as well as younger players fresh out of college.

The National Women's Soccer League will also include teams in Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, Portland, Seattle and Washington D.C.

Rampone, mother of two young girls, had lived in Point Borough for many years, graduated from Monmouth University and has been recently living in Manasquan. She recently tweeted that she and the Olympic gold medal women's soccer team, which have been visiting cities around the country, visited Newtown, Conn.

US Soccer President Sunil Gulati said teams like Sky Blue had a lot of interest from players wanting to join that roster.

"New Jersey was a popular place and we had lots of interest there," he said. That is one of the reasons Rampone was selected to play for her local team.

Much like Rampone was selected to the New Jersey team, fellow National Team member Abby Wambach was assigned to the Western New York Flash which will play in Rochester.

"She loves where she grew up, loves playing there and is very much looking forward to going back there," Gulati said. "The very strong preference from the team and the player, in this case, made that one easy."

In 2009, Rampone played for the similarly-named Sky Blue FC and helped lead the team to the Women's Professional Soccer league title as a player and also as a coach at the end of the season.
