UPDATED STORY: Stars, Highlights and New Photos from Boro Girls' Hoops Victory

Point Boro girls varsity basketball beats Summit 81-50

Point Pleasant Boro rode a wave of 3-pointers to an impressive 81-50 victory over Summit on Monday night in the Central Jersey Group 2 finals of the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJIAA) Girls Basketball Tournament.

The triumph clinched the third straight Sectional Championship for the Boro, which won the South Jersey Group 2 title last year and the South Jersey Group 3 crown in 2010.

Point Boro (22-8) will play Middle Township, the South Jersey Champion, in the Group 2 State Semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Deptford High School, Gloucester County.

Junior forward Kerry Malleck scored a career-high 24 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Panthers raced out to a 50-16 halftime lead against the Hilltoppers.

Junior guard Kelly Hughes added 21 points and her sister, junior guard Lauren Hughes, contributed four 3-pointers and a total of 14 points for the Boro.

From the outset, it was obvious that Summit (23-6) was determined to shut down Kelly Hughes, the Panthers' leading scorer.

But, seizing upon the opportunity of a preoccupied defense, Lauren Hughes and Malleck - who normally scores most of her points from inside 15 feet - combined to nail seven 3-pointers in the first half to put Boro well on the road to the easy victory.

Freshman guard Lindsey Havens pitched in with a pair of 3s in the second half to held keep Summit at bay.

In addition to the hot long-range shooting, Point Boro's stifling 1-3-1 zone defense - anchored by junior forward Jess Macchi - forced numerous deflected passes and turnovers by the Hilltoppers.
