Mixed Results for Beaches in Point Beach on Memorial Day Weekend

Of course business was not good at the local beaches last Friday and Saturday due to rainy, cool weather, but there was an improvement at Jenkinson's on Monday.

"Friday and Saturday were a washout, but Sunday and particularly Monday were really busy," said Toby Wolf, marketing director for Jenkinson's Boardwalk. "Monday was busier than the Monday of Memorial Day weekend last year."

Wolf said Jenkinson's does not release its beach badge totals.

Aqua Serve contracts to provide lifeguard and beach badge checking services at Bradshaw's Beach and the Maryland Avenue beach, the latter of which is the only beach the municipality owns.

Carla Vitale, whose son, Jay Vitale, owns Aqua Serve, said business stayed slow at those beaches, even on Sunday and Monday.

"Our business was very slow this weekend," she said late Thursday afternoon.

"But I wouldn't attribute that to Sandy. We had more people on the beach today than we did during Memorial Day weekend," Vitale said, towards the end of a hot, sunny day.

Vitale said she did not have available the number of beach badges sold during the weekend.

Aqua Serve also contracts to life guard Martell's beach, but does not sell badges there. That's handled by Martell's. A Martell's employee answering the phone on Thursday said Ed Brannagan, the assistant general manager, said Martell's has "no comment" regarding how beach business was during the holiday weekend.

Alice Lyons, owner of Risden's did not respond to an email and Mike Woods, Risden's manager, did not return a phone call.
