Christie Helps Reopen Belmar's Boardwalk

Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty: 'We're Back!'

Gov. Chris Christie, local officials and thousands of residents were on hand Wednesday morning to christen Belmar's rebuilt boardwalk. The 1.3 mile-long boardwalk, which spans the length of the borough, was destroyed Oct. 29 during Superstorm Sandy. Mayor Matt Doherty said crews began working to rebuild it in January and remained on schedule so it could be reopened by Memorial Day weekend.

Yes, I'm very happy for Belmar. I wish we were as far along as Belmar. But do you think he was in the area only for a rueben at Kelly's or a dog at Windmill? Maybe a slice at Mike's? It's always about the politics.   more ›

Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are, you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party.   1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try…

Oklahoma: Don't Visit, But Please Send Cash

Oklahoma urges out-of-state residents not to mail or truck in supplies, but would appreciate charitable contributions

Oklahoma and FEMA officials are asking those who want to help tornado victims to make charitable contributions, but not to mail or truck in any supplies. Even as Oklahoma officials are emphasizing how much they appreciate that folks from out-of-state want to roll truckloads of supplies into the tornado-ravaged area of the state, they have to politely decline because it would divert attention from handling the ongoing crisis and possibly create a mountain of items no one will want. "Please don't send used clothes or supplies and, no, we can't have trucks coming in," said Ann Dee Lee, a volunteer helping the Oklahoma Office of Emergency Management's public relations department field media calls. On Tuesday, plans were brewing among Jersey …

F-Cove to Reopen to Boaters Memorial Day Weekend

Popular Brick anchorage was shut down in 2012 by U.S. Fish & Wildlife; Wild partying will no longer be allowed

One of the most popular hangouts on Barnegat Bay will reopen to boaters this weekend. F-Cove, located just north of the Mantoloking Bridge in Brick, will reopen to boaters after being shut down for more than a year. The cove is a wildly popular gathering place where boaters often anchor up to spend time on the water. The area, made up of two undeveloped man-made lagoons off Barnegat Bay in the shape of the letter 'F,' became the subject of a dispute between local, state and federal authorities that resulted in the federal Fish and Wildlife service prohibiting boaters from accessing the site. Virginia Rettig, manager of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, said last year the cove belonged to Forsythe and recreational boating was …

Fallen N.J. Officers Remembered at Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony

Two officers died in the line of duty over the past year in New Jersey

The two New Jersey law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty over the past year were remembered Tuesday as courageous men who served their state proudly. Millville Police Patrolman Christopher Reeves, killed July 8, 2012 when his patrol car was rammed by a driver fleeing authorities, and New Jersey State Police Detective Sgt. James G. Hoopes, who died of a heart attack during training, were added to the list of the 467 New Jersey officers who have died in the line of duty since 1854. An indictment in the Reeves case was handed up May 8, the South Jersey Times reported. The annual memorial service, held at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, includes a ceremonial roll call of fallen officers and a 21 gun salute. The West …

Gov. Christie Tours Boardwalks in Anticipation of Memorial Day

In Lavallette Monday, Governor said he wants to highlight that the Jersey Shore is recovering

Gov. Chris Christie was in Lavallette Monday to help the borough celebrate the reconstruction of its boardwalk and promote tourism as Memorial Day Weekend nears.  Like many Jersey Shore towns, Lavallette's boardwalk was ravaged by Superstorm Sandy. The governor traveled to the borough to spread the word that New Jersey continues to recover.  "This is the first symbol, for us, of making sure this week that everybody across the state, across the region, and across America knows that the Jersey Shore is open for the summer and ready to receive our customers," Christie said in remarks there Monday.  The ceremonial "last board" in Lavallette was nailed down by borough officials. Numerous local business owners contributed attended the event, …
