Freeholders Approve $18.5 Million for Improvements at OCC

Growing enrollment, OCC-Kean partnership sparking need for new access driveway, student center

In two separate ordinances on Wednesday, the Ocean County Board of Freeholders approved $18.5 million in spending for improvements to the campus at Ocean County College. Thanks to state funding and money from the college itself, the measures are expected to cost the county $11 million of that total, however, Freeholder Deputy Director John C. Bartlett said. The improvements are the result of the college’s partnership with Kean University that allows students to start at OCC and wind up with a bachelor’s degree from Kean. “This is going to be a major development for our community,” Freeholder Director Gerry Little said. “It will offer students an affordable baccalaureate degree for under $25,000 total.” One ordinance, for $8.5 million, will…

Georgian Court to go Co-Ed in 2013

Male students to live on campus and compete in athletics

Georgian Court University announced a change on Tuesday that will dramatically change the face of the Lakewood school in the fall of 2013. The school will go co-ed after having served as a school for women since it opened more than 100 years ago. The school, which had only allowed men to take classes at night, will allow them to reside on campus as well as take part in the school's athletic program.  The decision, according to a school news release, followed "a strategic planning process that began in the summer of 2011." Tara Strickland, the school's assistant editorial director, said having men on the campus will not be new as they have been allowed to attend graduate classes since 1976 and regular classes since 1979. But fall 2013 will …

Report: Arts Education Leads to Higher Test Scores

New Jersey Arts Education Census Project surveys nearly all schools

A statewide survey of arts education programs in New Jersey schools to be released Thursday finds a positive correlation between schools with more arts education programs and greater proficiency scores on the language sections of the state's High School Proficiency Assessment.   The report is a follow-up to one conducted in 2007, and is a joint project of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the state Department of Education, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Jersey Arts Education Partnership, ArtPride New Jersey Foundation, and Quadrant Arts Education Research. According to Robert Morrison, project coordinator of the report and founder of Quadrant Arts Education Research, the report compiled survey responses from about 99 percent of…

Elementary schools and Borough, Beach and Bay Head businesses provide dinner and more to families with ill children

Point Borough Schools and local businesses worked together to provide a feast for families of ill children at the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. Students, families and staff at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School and Ocean Road Elementary School, along with school district administrators and numerous businesses in Point Borough, Point Beach and Bay Head joined forces to provide a sumptuous dinner, including desserts, to about 90 people on April 30. The collaborative effort filled a few large vans with food that local school district and business owners drove to the Ronald McDonald House, where they served dinner to families going through difficult ordeals. Point Borough Schools Business Administrator Steven Corso said the …

NJSIAA Adds Group Classification to Football

Executive committee approves proposal to add Group V

Beginning this fall, 160 high school football teams around the state will have the opportunity to win a state sectional championship, under a proposal approved by the NJSIAA this afternoon. The NJSIAA Executive Committee approved the proposal to create a Group V designation in the four public school sections by a vote of 22-5-3 at its meeting in Robbinsville, according to Jack DuBois, NJSIAA assistant director who's in charge of football. "This creates a greater opportunity for schools and for student-athletes," DuBois said. "It increases the number of teams playing in the playoffs from 128 to 160. At the same time, it eliminates 16 consolation games that schools didn't want to play anyway." The proposal also allows teams whose records are…

Rocco: Retiring for More Time for Family and Travel

Point Boro High School Principal's colleagues offer tributes

Point Borough High School Principal Linda Rocco is retiring to spend more time with her family and to travel. Rocco, 58, of Spring Lake Heights, has four grown children, including a daughter living in London and another in San Francisco. She wants to see them all a lot more often and she's eligible to retire, so, she decided it's time to leave the public high school where she has been principal since 2007. "I have been in education since 1976, the year I graduated Montclair State, so the reason I am retiring is because I can!" said Rocco in an email Wednesday morning. "I love my job and have enjoyed working in the Point Pleasant School District, but I want to spend more time with my family." Rocco has a third daughter, who lives in New …

H.S. Football Playoff Proposal Faces Vote

The NJSIAA Executive Committee is expected to vote on — and likely approve — the creation of Group Vs in the public school sections for the high school football playoffs

More local football teams will have an opportunity to play in the high school football playoffs if the NJSIAA Executive Committee approves an expansion proposal at its meeting today. In early April the committee approved on first reading a proposal submitted by Northern Highlands High School of Bergen County to create a Group V in each of the four public school sections. Currently, there are four groups in each of the state’s sections: North Jersey Section 1, North Jersey Section 2, Central Jersey and South Jersey. NJSIAA officials say the proposal would create more opportunities for the players and the teams, while some point out that it also would increase playoff ticket revenue for the organization, which has come under fire in recent …

Ridiculous is right.... so instead of 20 state champions... there will be 24... what a joke to call yourself "state champion"... If anything, I thought this was a playoff to determine each Group Champion... so that only 4 public and 1 non-public state champion for NJ!!!   more ›

Point Boro HS Principal Retiring

Board of Education accepts Linda Rocco's retirement notice

Point Borough High School Principal Linda Rocco is retiring, effective Sept. 1, prompting the district to conduct a statewide search for a replacement. The Point Borough Board of Education voted unanimously at its workshop meeting Monday night to accept her resignation "for the purpose of retirement," as stated on the meeting agenda. Rocco, a Spring Lake Heights resident, has been principal of Point Borough High School since 2007 when John Staryak retired from the position, which was a year before Schools Superintendent Vincent Smith was appointed superintendent, Smith said. Rocco, who also is Supervisor of Performing Arts, earns an annual salary of $145,715 for the current school year, Smith said. Starting July 1, her salary increases to…

It's obvious to me that current Nellie Bennett principal Mr. James Karaba should succeed Linda Rocco as she succeeded Carl Perry from the very same position. This man is the epitome of all the positive qualities a principal should be. The children always come first with this man along with his interpersonal skills with parents and his hands on approach to education, which make him the right …   more ›

Flower Pick-up/Sale and Car Wash for Project Graduation this Weekend

Petal Street Flower Co. donating part of corsage and boutonniere sales to Project Graduation

Point Borough High School parents are urging the community to take a few minutes out of their weekend to help Project Graduation be a success. Those who ordered flowers from the Project Graduation Committee need to pick them up at the high school cafeteria between 9 a.m. and noon Saturday. For those who neglected to order by last week's deadline, and are kind of regretting it, there is still one last chance. Come to the high school cafeteria Saturday morning and pick out some flowers, on a first come-first served basis, from those not already set aside to fill orders. On Sunday, the Project Graduation Committee will have a car wash, "for goodwill donations" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the STS parking lot on Bridge Avenue, said Noelle Grcic of…

Bring flier with you so proceeds go to Boro Band

If a purchase is made for a family or group, only one flier is needed for the purchase. Or you can print out the flier as it appears on the school district's high school home page. The fundraiser runs from 5 to 9 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of every month through early June.
