BlueClaws Hosting Shore Sports Hall of Fame Induction

Local athletes and coaches to be recognized June 29.

When the Lakewood BlueClaws take on the West Virginia Power in a Friday night game next month the team will also help welcome the newest class to the Shore Sports Hall of Fame.  This is the first time a new class has been inducted and includes a Little League team that made national headlines, a current and past professional football player and a mixed martial arts champion among others. The class also has strong representation for several Shore Conference schools especially Toms River East and Lacey. Before the scheduled fireworks display BlueClaws General Manager Brandon Marshall said fans should get a good show seeing the wide variety of inductees. OCC Announces TV Schedule for 46th Commencement

Ceremonies will be broadcast locally the week of May 20

Ocean County College will broadcast its 46th annual commencement ceremony live on local television this upcoming week.  Ocean TV 20, which is carried on channel 20 by Comcast of Toms River and Long Beach Island and channel 24 on Verizon FiOS of Northern Ocean County, will show the ceremony live at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.  Rebroadcasts of the ceremony will be shown on Friday, May 24 and Sunday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m., according to the college.  The nurses' pinning ceremony will air on Wednesday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 26 at 4 p.m. The 46th annual Awards Ceremony will be broadcast on Thursday, May 23 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 26 at 6 p.m., the college said.  More information about Ocean County College's 2013 graduation, which …

Parade for Point Beach School Champs on Friday

Line up at 3:30 p.m. on Cooks Lane

  Point Pleasant Beach is throwing a "Parade of Champions" to honor first place student state champions on Friday and all students, residents and alumni are welcome. The town will hold a parade celebrating champions in basketball, bowling and academic problem-solving, with the line-up starting on Cooks Lane at 3:30 p.m. and the parade beginning at 4 p.m. on what Mayor Vincent Barrella and council have declared is "Red and White Day." The route will be from Cooks, up Arnold Avenue, to Cramer, Gowdy, Forman and then ending in the high school gym.  The event honors the girls and boys Point Beach High School basketball teams which both won state championships this past season; Bryce Petraccoro, a Point Beach student who achieved the best …

Lacey Superintendent, Charged With Hiding Sex-Abuse Case, Is Suspended Without Pay

LACEY, NJ -- The Lacey Board of Education suspended Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower without pay Friday evening, nearly a week after she was indicted by a Monmouth County grand jury. Four board members voted to suspend Brower, 46, after she was charged with second-degree official misconduct, third-degree hindering apprehension and fourth-degree obstruction. Board members Eric Schubinger, Jack Martenak and Linda Downing abstained during the special meeting due to conflicts of interest because of family members who work for the district. “It’s a sad turn of events what happened here. Toms River's Board of Education will investigate the alleged police impersonation and sex crime at Intermediate East, and the teacher who allegedly was victimized has been suspended with pay while that process unfolds, according to Superintendent of Schools Frank Roselli.  "In the interest of the teacher, students and staff, and pending a thorough investigation, the teacher in question has been put on suspension with pay," Roselli writes in a letter posted to the Intermediate East website Friday. MATES Students Win State 'Envirothon' Competition

Students from Brick, Toms River among the winners

For the fourth year in a row, a team of high school students from the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Sciences (MATES) in Manahawkin was the winner of the New Jersey Envirothon, held Saturday, May 4 at Girl Scout Camp Kettle Run in Medford, the state's Department of Agriculture has announced. The team, consisting of  Emily Golembiski of Little Egg Harbor, Jillian Hubbard of Toms River, Gillian Schriever of West Creek, Michael Signorelli of Toms River and Megan Tumpey of  Brick, will represent New Jersey in the 2013 North American Envirothon at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana in August.  The Ocean County students competed against 33 other teams on knowledge of natural resources-related topics, including soils, …

Lacey school board members will have more to say about the indictment of schools Superintendent Sandra Brower at a special meeting on Friday night,  Board President Eric J. Schubiger said this afternoon. The meeting will get underway at 8 p.m. in the lecture hall at Lacey Township High School, he said. "It will be open to the public," Schubiger said. Several board members earlier this week declined to comment on the matter and referred all press inquiries to Schubiger. This is already happened long ago! Their isn't that many American doctors left...they can't even get into Medical School. They have a quota, more foreigner get in from different parts of the country and maybe a few Americans a year. Same thing goes for all the colleges the foreigners get a free education at Ivy league colleges. Americans that have just as good records get pushed to the side.   more ›

Disabled College Student Works to Improve Lives of Others With Technology

OCC second year student Nick Tyler to continue studying computer science after graduation this month

When Nick Tyler graduates from Ocean County College in Toms River, N.J. later this month, he'll do so with a dual mission in mind: continue his computer science studies at Kean University, then use his programming skills to make life easier for those with disabilities. For his efforts, Tyler has been chosen as Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day. Tyler, of Brick Township, N.J., relies on technology to help him navigate life on a daily basis to a much greater extent than most people. He was born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which has resulted in his having limited control of his arms and legs, as well as his voice. SECOND UPDATE: Phones Also Restored in Point Boro Schools

HS band concert will be held tonight as scheduled

  Phone service has now been restored at Point Borough public schools, according to an instant alert issued by the district at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday. Also, the Point Borough High School band concert will be held at 7 tonight, as previously scheduled, at the Loren Donley Auditorium at the high school. Admission is free. Earlier this afternoon, power was restored at Point Pleasant Borough High School where an outage had prompted an early student dismissal shortly before 12:30 p.m. today. The power outage started at the high school at 12:02 p.m. and was restored at 1:13 p.m. Wednesday, said Gerry Ricciardi, JCP&L area manager. The cause of the outage was a seagull had gotten in between two wires which shorted out the power and caused fuses to …
