Parade for Point Beach School Champs on Friday

Line up at 3:30 p.m. on Cooks Lane

  Point Pleasant Beach is throwing a "Parade of Champions" to honor first place student state champions on Friday and all students, residents and alumni are welcome. The town will hold a parade celebrating champions in basketball, bowling and academic problem-solving, with the line-up starting on Cooks Lane at 3:30 p.m. and the parade beginning at 4 p.m. on what Mayor Vincent Barrella and council have declared is "Red and White Day." The route will be from Cooks, up Arnold Avenue, to Cramer, Gowdy, Forman and then ending in the high school gym.  The event honors the girls and boys Point Beach High School basketball teams which both won state championships this past season; Bryce Petraccoro, a Point Beach student who achieved the best …

LACEY, NJ -- The Lacey Board of Education suspended Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower without pay Friday evening, nearly a week after she was indicted by a Monmouth County grand jury. Four board members voted to suspend Brower, 46, after she was charged with second-degree official misconduct, third-degree hindering apprehension and fourth-degree obstruction. Board members Eric Schubinger, Jack Martenak and Linda Downing abstained during the special meeting due to conflicts of interest because of family members who work for the district. “It’s a sad turn of events what happened here. Board of Education will "get to the bottom of what occurred" at Intermediate East, president said

Toms River's Board of Education will investigate the alleged police impersonation and sex crime at Intermediate East, and the teacher who allegedly was victimized has been suspended with pay while that process unfolds, according to Superintendent of Schools Frank Roselli.  "In the interest of the teacher, students and staff, and pending a thorough investigation, the teacher in question has been put on suspension with pay," Roselli writes in a letter posted to the Intermediate East website Friday. MATES Students Win State 'Envirothon' Competition

Students from Brick, Toms River among the winners

For the fourth year in a row, a team of high school students from the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Sciences (MATES) in Manahawkin was the winner of the New Jersey Envirothon, held Saturday, May 4 at Girl Scout Camp Kettle Run in Medford, the state's Department of Agriculture has announced. The team, consisting of  Emily Golembiski of Little Egg Harbor, Jillian Hubbard of Toms River, Gillian Schriever of West Creek, Michael Signorelli of Toms River and Megan Tumpey of  Brick, will represent New Jersey in the 2013 North American Envirothon at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana in August.  The Ocean County students competed against 33 other teams on knowledge of natural resources-related topics, including soils, …

Lacey school board members will have more to say about the indictment of schools Superintendent Sandra Brower at a special meeting on Friday night,  Board President Eric J. Schubiger said this afternoon. The meeting will get underway at 8 p.m. in the lecture hall at Lacey Township High School, he said. "It will be open to the public," Schubiger said. Disabled College Student Works to Improve Lives of Others With Technology

OCC second year student Nick Tyler to continue studying computer science after graduation this month

When Nick Tyler graduates from Ocean County College in Toms River, N.J. later this month, he'll do so with a dual mission in mind: continue his computer science studies at Kean University, then use his programming skills to make life easier for those with disabilities. For his efforts, Tyler has been chosen as Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day. Tyler, of Brick Township, N.J., relies on technology to help him navigate life on a daily basis to a much greater extent than most people. He was born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which has resulted in his having limited control of his arms and legs, as well as his voice. SECOND UPDATE: Phones Also Restored in Point Boro Schools

HS band concert will be held tonight as scheduled

  Phone service has now been restored at Point Borough public schools, according to an instant alert issued by the district at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday. Also, the Point Borough High School band concert will be held at 7 tonight, as previously scheduled, at the Loren Donley Auditorium at the high school. Admission is free. Earlier this afternoon, power was restored at Point Pleasant Borough High School where an outage had prompted an early student dismissal shortly before 12:30 p.m. today. The power outage started at the high school at 12:02 p.m. and was restored at 1:13 p.m. Wednesday, said Gerry Ricciardi, JCP&L area manager. The cause of the outage was a seagull had gotten in between two wires which shorted out the power and caused fuses to …

The community came to grips Tuesday with the news that Lacey Schools Superintendent Sandra Brower faces charges that she failed to report a possible sex-abuse case while serving as a school administrator in Wall. Brower pleaded not guilty to the charges during an appearance Monday before Judge Francis J. Vernoia at the Monmouth County Courthouse in Freehold. No bail was set and Brower was released. She is scheduled to appear in court again on June 10 at 1:30 p.m. Lacey Mayor David Most said he respects Brower and the work she has done for the community. Lacey Township's schools superintendent was indicted Monday morning on charges she failed to immediately report a teacher's possible sexual assault of a 4-year-old special needs student while she was Wall Township's assistant superintendent, according to an indictment. Sandra Brower, 46, then lied to police and tried to cover up her inaction, according to the Monmouth County indictment. Brower, a Wall resident, is charged with second-degree official misconduct, third-degree hindering apprehension and fourth-degree obstruction, according to the indictment.
