The community came to grips Tuesday with the news that Lacey Schools Superintendent Sandra Brower faces charges that she failed to report a possible sex-abuse case while serving as a school administrator in Wall. Brower pleaded not guilty to the charges during an appearance Monday before Judge Francis J. Vernoia at the Monmouth County Courthouse in Freehold. No bail was set and Brower was released. Lacey Township's schools superintendent was indicted Monday morning on charges she failed to immediately report a teacher's possible sexual assault of a 4-year-old special needs student while she was Wall Township's assistant superintendent, according to an indictment. Sandra Brower, 46, then lied to police and tried to cover up her inaction, according to the Monmouth County indictment. Brower, a Wall resident, is charged with second-degree official misconduct, third-degree hindering apprehension and fourth-degree obstruction, according to the indictment. The Lacey Township Board of Education is planning to hold a special meeting soon to deal with the ramifications of schools Superintendent Sandra Brower's indictment in Monmouth County. Bruce A. Figular, 50, entered a Toms River school unlawfully in January, authorities said
A Toms River man impersonated a police officer to enter a township school where he committed aggravated sexual contact on a teacher, an indictment charges. Bruce A. Figular, 50, allegedly unlawfully entered a Toms River school during a regular school day through an open door, claiming he was a police officer, on or about Jan. 13, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. "He was challenged by a school employee and presented himself as an active duty New Jersey State Trooper," Della Fave said in a statement. "Once inside one of the classroom areas, he committed an act of aggravated sexual contact upon one of the teachers." US Dept. Ed. funds $1.25 million to districts in NJ
Point Beach and Point Borough school districts are among the Sandy-impacted districts receiving funds through a $1.25 million grant from the US Department of Education, according to an announcement made Tuesday afternoon by the state Department of Education and the governor's office. Point Beach schools are receiving $16,001 and Point Borough is receiving $7,820, according to a prepared statement from the governor's office. The big winners are Keansburg receiving $322,527 and then Brick receiving $211,891 (see chart below). Held at Ocean County jail on $200,000 bail
A Lakewood man has been arrested and charged in the April 8 armed robbery of the Walgreen's pharmacy, 1501 Richmond Ave. (Route 35 South), Point Pleasant Borough. John W. Praznic, 29, was arrested without incident on Friday April 26, in Lakewood by Point Pleasant Detectives Edward Miller and Joseph Hynes and Detective Lt. Adam Picca after an extensive investigation, according to Borough police. Praznic was charged with first degree armed robbery, third degree terroristic threats and third degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, police said in a prepared statement issued Monday morning. Ocean County College is now taking registration for summer and fall classes. For summer courses, those interested in attending college can register until Sunday, May 19 for the first five-week and ten-week session. Classes start Monday, May 20. Registration for the second five-week and six-week sessions goes until Tuesday, June 25. Classes start Monday, Aug. 5. Ocean County College is also taking registration for fall courses, which start Wednesday, Sept. 4 and run for 15 weeks. For some courses, students may be required to take the College Placement Test. G. Harold Antrim Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is holding a “Rockin’ the 80s” fundraiser at 7 p.m. Saturday at Jenk's Club on the boardwalk. Admission to the First Annual Spring Dance Fundraiser is $20, which includes a buffet from 7:30 to 10 p.m. and dancing. The G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program continues to grow throughout the county, as the Office of the Ocean County Prosecutor partners with law enforcement departments to prevent gang recruitment, Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato said. “Law enforcement must take proactive measures to prevent the spread of crime and violence,” he said. “The G.R.E.A.T. program does that for those we hold most precious — our children.” G.R.E.A.T. is a curriculum instructed by law enforcement officers to prevent delinquency, violence and gang membership. Buy flowers to help local Point Borough High School graduates stay safe after graduation. The annual Spring Flower and Plant Sale is the last major fundraiser for Project Graduation and the deadline to order is Friday. So far, sales are way behind last year's. "We really count on the flower sale to help cover the costs of the night," said Nancy Pazienza of the the committee planning the alcohol and drug free night at the Atlantic Club in Wall following the June 18 graduation. "So far we have less than half the amount of orders we had last year and a third of the amount of sales. The orders and payment need to be in school by 2:30 p.m. Friday.
