Over 40 members of the Jersey Shore Running Club participated in the marathon.
Text messages and phone calls flew rapidly among members of the Jersey Shore Running Club (JSRC) Monday. Any other year, these would have been messages of congratulations for the 40 or so club members running the challenging Boston Marathon course. Instead, the communications took on urgency: are they all safe? Moira Easton Haron of Spring Lake Heights ran faster than her planned marathon time and finished ahead of the explosions. Krissy Suckow of Wall made it out of Boston and was on her way home. All the JSRC members were indeed fine. With the club’s largest racing event, RunAPalooza, set to take place in Asbury Park on Saturday, JSRC leaders called for a show of solidarity at the event. Wear blue and yellow, the Boston Marathon colors…

Several runners from area had registered for marathon
A Spring Lake Heights woman who was running in the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon is OK following two explosions just before 3 p.m., she said. Moira Easton Horan, of Spring Lake Heights, wasn't harmed in Monday's explosion, she announced on her facebook page, from Boston. A race registrant from Manasquan, Robert Flannery, decided not to run the marathon about two weeks ago after a surgery, he said. He was home safe. Horan, who is heavily involved in a Jersey Shore community of female triathletes and runners, said she was thankful she ran faster than she had planned during her training, as the decision likely put her out of harms way. "All I can say is thank god I decided to run fast. My initial plan would have put me right in that mess …

Rice was recently fired from his spot as the head coach of Rutgers Basketball for his aggressive coaching techniques.
Former Rutgers head basketball coach Mike Rice is continuing his coaching career, with the NJ Shore Shots 7th grade girls team. Rice, who was fired from his position after a video of aggressive coaching practices aired on ESPN, has apparently been coaching his daughter's team for years, according to the Asbury Park Press. Rice can be found on the coaches list for the NJ Shore Shots online. Brian Geltzeiler of Hoopscritic.com shed light beyond the shore's borders last weekend after pointing out on Twitter that Rice was seen in Holmdel "as crazy as ever." "One of my moles is watching Mike Rice coach 12 year old girls at Holmdel High in NJ right now as crazy as ever yelling @ both refs and kids," he said on Twitter. Geltzeiler went on to say …

Severance packages and litigation over the Mike Rice scandal will cost the university millions
The controversy surrounding Rutgers head basketball coach Mike Rice continued buzzing through the weekend, as reports came out that the aftermath of the scandal that displaced Rice and athletic director Tim Pernetti will come at a large cost to Rutgers. According to a report on NJ.com, some supporters of the athletics department are threatening to withhold their charitable donations over Pernetti's resignation, and Rice and Pernetti are both expected to walk away with more than a million dollars in cash and perks. Litigation would likely cost the university a lot more. Eric Murdock, the former director of player development who brought the video containing Rice's now nationally-known controversial coaching, has filed a lawsuit against …

Monmouth, Ocean county town names on jerseys of players, staff
It was a big hit: Opening weekend for the Lakewood BlueClaws featured special jerseys worn by players and staff for a "Restore the Shore" theme that helped Hurricane Sandy charity efforts. Each player wore a jersey with a town name on the back, highlighting a town from Monmouth or Ocean counties. All the jerseys would be auctioned off, bids placed on a table on the concourse over the opening weekend at the stadium. Many of the jerseys drew bids totalling several hundred dollars, while the minimum opening bid was $125. The event lasted through April 7.

Rutgers University President Robert L. Barchi says that if he could do it over again, he would
Rutgers Athletic Director Tim Pernetti said he wanted to fire Coach Tim Rice, but was overruled by Rutgers University. Rutgers released a letter of resignation today from Pernetti to University President Robert L. Barchi in which he said that he'd seen video of Rice verbally and physically abusing players, brought his findings to Barachi, and recommended that he be let go. "As you know, my first instincts when I saw the videotape of Coach Rice's behavior was to fire him immediately. However, Rutgers decided to follow a process involving university lawyers, human resources professionals, and outside counsel. "Following review of the independent investigative report, the consensus was that university policy would not justify dismissal. I …

Garden State Equality demands full investigation of administration that knew for months about Rice's abusive behavior towards his team
From Point Borough to New Brunswick to Washington D.C., reaction came swift and unsparingly Wednesday to news of Rutgers firing basketball coach Michael Rice. David Drew, coach of the highly successful Point Pleasant Borough High School girls basketball team, when asked on Wednesday afternoon, said that he agreed with the university's decision to fire the coach captured on video being verbally and physically abusive towards his own team. The abuse, as captured on this ESPN Outside the Lines video, included Rice using homophobic, insulting slurs and curse words, kicking players and throwing balls at players, including at their heads. University administration had seen the video and other footage last year, fined Rice $50,000 and suspended…
Athletic Director Tim Pernetti has confirmed that basketball coach Mike Rice has been terminated
After less than a day of deflecting a storm of bad press surrounding head basketball coach Mike Rice's coaching methods, Rutgers Athletic Director Tim Pernetti has confirmed that Rice has been fired. According to a report on NJ.com, Pernetti issued the following statement on Wednesday: "I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice," Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti said in a statement. "Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community." On Tuesday, a video surfaced of Rice, a Little Silver resident, yelling offensive language and shoving…
