Barrella and Mayer have words over parking plan
Point Beach Council late Tuesday night unanimously tanked an ordinance mandating that bars stop serving alcohol at midnight, but there was a lot of acrimony over talk of a new parking plan. The council, as anticipated, voted on first reading to repeal an ordinance for bars to stop serving alcohol at midnight, a measure that was blocked temporarily by the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control last summer. The ordinance to keep closings at 2 a.m. is scheduled for public hearing and adoption at the Feb. 19 meeting. The repeal was prompted by the town and Jenkinson's Boardwalk coming to an agreement last month for the town to repeal the measure and for Jenkinson's to drop all legal action against the earlier bar closing ordinance and …

Andy Cortes will be sworn in as new council member
The Point Beach Council Organization meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 5. The Point Beach Council voted unanimously on Tuesday night for the scheduling of the organization meeting, as part of a vote for a "consent agenda" that contained numerous agenda items. However, at least a few council members were not delighted about the date. Council members Stephen Reid and William Mayer asked Mayor Vincent Barrella why the meeting was not Jan. 1, which has often been the date for the council's organization meeting every year. Mayer said, "I was disappointed my schedule wasn't consulted." Barrella said Council member Michael Corbally, who was absent Tuesday night, will not be back from a vacation by Jan. 1, so he postponed the meeting until …

Council, following mayor's recommendation, votes for agreement that also includes Jenkinson's help in boardwalk repairs
It's a Christmas miracle. The Point Beach Council, on the recommendation of the mayor, voted unanimously Tuesday night for a compromise with Jenkinson's that calls for rescinding the early bar closing ordinance and revising the parking plan in exchange for Jenkinson's to drop lawsuits against those measures and to pay up to $1 million towards boardwalk repair expenses. Councilmember Michael Corbally was absent. Mayor Vincent Barrella announced in the early portion of Tuesday night's meeting that he and Municipal Business Administrator Chris Riehl had met a few times with Jenkinson's representatives, including two meetings last week with Pat, Anthony and Frank Storino, who have owned Jenkinson's, since 1976, that led to the agreement. …

Barrella said he'd be willing to pull ordinance if all lawsuits were first withdrawn
Point Beach Mayor Vincent Barrella said at Tuesday night's council meeting that he would be willing to repeal the proposed earlier bar closing ordinance if all lawsuits against that and the District 4 parking plan were first dropped. During his committee report, Barrella brought up the topic of the controversial earlier bar closing proposal that was temporarily "stayed" by the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control and still being fought in litigation filed by Jenkinson's and Martell's. "If the lawsuits were dropped, I'd have no problem dropping the midnight bar closing ordinance," he said. "But you can't withdraw an ordinance while litigation is pending." He said after the meeting, "I was told that the bars have been trying to quiet…

Unusual mayor-council alliances tank ordinance to bill businesses for part of cost
Point Beach Council voted nearly unanimously to fix an Irene-ravaged section of boardwalk without help from boardwalk businesses, right after an initial move to bill businesses for part of the cost narrowly failed. The lengthy discussion, and, ultimately, the votes on the issue, did not play out along the usual political alliances. Councilmember Tim Lurie agreed with Mayor Vincent Barrella to not pass the first ordinance to bill Jenkinson's and Risden's for part of the cost, and disagreed with Councilmember William Mayer; Councilmembers Michael Corbally and Kristine Tooker agreed with Mayer and disagreed with Councilmember Bret Gordon; Councilmember Stephen Reid disagreed with Mayer, but agreed with Barrella and Gordon. Yes, it was unusual…

Barrella says state should send troopers since it won't let the town close bars at midnight
Point Beach Mayor Vincent Barrella says he will ask Gov. Chris Christie to send state troopers to patrol the boardwalk after midnight because the state is allowing bars to serve alcohol past that time. Barrella says he'll ask the Borough Council to support a request he'll make for state troopers to police "the center of the boardwalk from midnight to 2 or 3 a.m." since the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control has temporarily blocked the town from enforcing an ordinance for bars to stop serving alcohol by midnight. "I'll write to the governor, in light of the state interference, to send in 18 state troopers a night, so I can pull our officers off the boardwalk and put them into residential neighborhoods," Barrella said. Since the …

Boardwalk offer leaked to newspaper at same time as it was sent to mayor
A letter about an offer from boardwalk businesses to pay Point Beach $800,000 over five years was sent to a newspaper right around the same time it was sent to the mayor. And he's not happy about it. Point Beach Mayor Vincent Barrella said that before noon Thursday, he got a call from The Ocean Star asking him to comment on a letter they had received within the previous half-hour from Ron Gasiorowski, an attorney for Jenkinson's and Martell's. "I was unaware of the existence of this letter until that phone call," Barrella said. "Upon receiving the call from The Ocean Star, I checked my e-mail and discovered that Mr. Gasiorowski's letter had apparently been sent to me simultaneously, or within minutes of it being sent to The Ocean Star. The…
Boardwalk still offering $800,000 over five years, despite state saying proposed bar ordinance "appears to be unlawful"
A Boardwalk offer to pay $800,000 over five years is "still on the table," despite that the state says a related town proposal "appears to be unlawful." Marilou Halvorsen, Director of Marketing for Jenkinson's Boardwalk, said late Tuesday afternoon that Jenkinson's and Martell's are still jointly offering the payment, despite that the state Department of Community Affairs is questioning the legality of a proposed ordinance that would compel bars to pay fees to stay open past midnight (see related story posted on top of home page). "But if they pass a 12 o'clock bar closing, I'm sure it won't be," Halvorsen said. "But our offer is still on the table because it's in everyone's best interest to come up with a resolution," she said. Now it …

Ordinances calling for earlier bar closings or payments are on Tuesday night Point Beach Council agenda
Point Beach Council member Kristine Tooker says Councilman William Mayer never came to her with a financial offer from the boardwalk and that he should not be saying she "rejected" one. Mayer says Tooker is wrong, that he did ask her whether she approves of a boardwalk offer of $140,000 that he describes as the boardwalk's "alternative" to ordinances calling for either earlier bar closings or payments to stay open later, as well as the removal of a separate ordinance restricting parking in the boardwalk bars' District 4. And so goes just one of many disagreements regarding the failed "negotiations" between the town and Jenkinson's Boardwalk and Martell's Tiki Bar. There is not even agreement that they were "negotiations." "They were not '…
