Center section of boardwalk slated for work after the summer may be replaced with wood, not rebuilt with Trex
The "plaza" section of the boardwalk, from Arnold Avenue to Jenkinson's Aquarium, might be rebuilt with wood, not with Trex. There was discussion at Tuesday night's Point Beach Council meeting about rebuilding the plaza section with wood, not Trex, the plastic material that is being used to replace the sections of the boardwalk which were damaged by Tropical Storm Irene or Superstorm Sandy. But there was a general consensus at the meeting at Borough Hall that that decision won't be made until council gets additional information from Borough Engineer Ray Savacool. Based on information from Savacool so far, it appears that removing and replacing the boards in the plaza section with wood boards would cost about $280,000 and rebuilding with …

Boardwalk to be done by Memorial Day weekend
Shortly after Point Beach announced it had not received a dime of FEMA money, FEMA announced it's sending the oceanfront town $2.1 million to help pay for the rebuilding of its Sandy-ravaged boardwalk. Eight days after Point Beach officials at a council meeting bemoaned the lack of cash flowing from FEMA, FEMA made its announcement. On Wednesday afternoon, U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez (both D-NJ) today announced that Point Pleasant Beach will receive more than $2.1 million to reimburse the town for the cost of repairing and rebuilding the boardwalk. The allocation reimburses the town for 75 percent of its written request to FEMA for the cost of the boardwalk repairs and rebuilding, said Point Beach Business …

Beach Sweeps collects garbage and more in Boro and Beach
A message in a bottle, a plastic bottle filled with sand, a flip flop, building materials, dog poop and lots of plastic were among the items found on the sand in Point Beach and Point Borough on Saturday. Skyler Kummer, 8, a Point Borough resident, found a message in a bottle during the Saturday morning Beach Sweeps at Maxson Avenue beach in the Borough. The message was sent on Oct. 9, 2012 by Robert Peters from a Spring Lake beach. Skyler notified Peters of the find and he said he had been hoping it would be found in South Africa rather than so close to home. "Skyler is very happy with her find," said Beth Degen, her mother. The message said: "This message was sent from the beach in Spring lake, NJ. Date sent: 10-9-12. Mail back with …

Bridge between Point Beach and Brielle to remain passable
You'll be able to keep crossing the Route 35 bridge when you come to it. It's been passable since mid-afternoon Wednesday and it looks like it will stay that way. The state says the testing on the bridge is finished, which is good news for those who sat in traffic Wednesday as the bridge was intermittently in the raised position. Contractor crews left the bridge shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday and will not need to return. Contractors for the state Department of Transportation (DOT) were testing the locking mechanisms on the bridge, they ran two or three tests and they were just fine, said DOT spokesman Timothy Greeley on Thursday. "They do not have anything further planned," Greeley said. Acknowledging that not getting the word out to the…
A questionable phone call prompted a search, but it was all clear
Police are patrolling the G. Harold Antrim Elementary School today and continuing to investigate a call that had prompted them to search the school on Wednesday, said Point Beach Police Chief Kevin O'Hara on Thursday morning. The school was searched after students had been dismissed on Wednesday afternoon, nothing was found and there was no incident, said O'Hara. He added that the investigation is ongoing and police are not yet disclosing the exact wording of the call left as a recorded message on the school's attendance line. "The message was not specific as to any threat, it was a four or five word message," O'Hara said. "The message was very vague and there are different ways to interpret it. But the school administration and …

But state DOT may be doing work again Thurs. or Fri.
The Route 35 bridge, between Point Pleasant Beach and Brielle, is now passable again, but might be up again tomorrow. Contractors for the state Department of Transportation (DOT) have finished work for the day, but may need to do additional work Thursday, possibly even Friday, said Timothy Greeley, a DOT spokesperson. If there is more work to be done, necessitating keeping the bridge in the raised position, it will be done only between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Greeley said. The bridge was kept in the raised position for hours earlier today, causing a major traffic-back up this morning. On Wednesday afternoon, Greeley, in response to Patch's questions about the bridge, wrote in an email: "Our guys are doing some maintenance testing of the Route…
