Police Investigating Incident at Walgreen's, Route 35

Police at scene Monday night only hours after responding to a false theft report there

Police were at Walgreen's, Route 35 South, Point Pleasant Borough, investigating an incident Monday night, only hours after investigating a false report of a theft outside the same store. Patch has been unable to reach any police officials authorized to release information to the media. However, a store manager said shortly after 7:30 p.m.  that there had been "an incident" at the store that police are investigating, the store is closed, but may be open later tonight and he cannot release any further details. Point Borough police and the Ocean County Criminalistics Investigation Unit, part of the county sheriff's department, were on the scene. A Point Pleasant Beach police officer had been there, but left the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m…

Tooker Not Running for Point Beach Council

Needs time for personal interests; endorses Democrats

Point Beach Councilmember Kristine Tooker is not running for reelection because she wants to pursue personal interests and because she has faith in the two Democrats running. Tooker, a former registered Republican now registered as an Independent, is endorsing Democratic incumbent Michael Corbally and Democrat Tom Davis for two, three-year council seats up for grabs in November. Davis is running as a Democrat, after running unsuccessfully as an Independent last November when Republicans Stephen Reid and Andy Cortes won two council seats. In the upcoming primary on June 4, Corbally and Davis are running unopposed on the Democratic ticket. Republicans Tom Vogel, former mayor and councilman, and Tom Toohey are running unopposed in the June …

69-Tom Davis got a sweetheart deal from the town's assessor, and Tooker got a job for someone that lives in Toms River. . .am I mistaken? PS: the Star Ledger reported Sunday that the Beach's tax ratables are down 4.26%. That figure might not mean much until those who have not gotten property reductions get their new tax bill.   more ›

Davis, Corbally, Vogel and Toohey to Run in Point Beach

Former Mayor Tom Vogel and Tom Toohey run on GOP slate; Incumbent Councilman Michael Corbally and Tom Davis run as Democrats

Former Mayor Tom Vogel and newcomer Tom Toohey will run on the Republican slate for two, three-year council seats in Point Pleasant Beach, according to the municipal clerk's office. Democratic Incumbent Councilman Michael Corbally will run for reelection on a slate with Tom Davis, who ran unsuccessfully last year as an Independent. Vogel, who lives on Ocean Avenue in District 4, was a councilman in 2003 and mayor from 2004 through 2007. Toohey, a newcomer, lives on Cramer Avenue in District 2. Corbally lives on Lake Terrace, off Niblick Street, in District 4 and Davis lives on Trenton in District 2. The other seat up for grabs is now held by Kristine Tooker, a registered Republican who ran as an Independent the last time she was elected…

Seal on Bay Head Beach on Wed.

Seal near Bridge Avenue jetty

A seal was spotted on a Bay Head beach and captured in this video and photo at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Bay Head Patrolman Zachary Keller said he responded to the scene at about 2 or 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and that the seal did not appear to be injured. "He looked like he was just resting," Keller said. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine said they received multiple phone calls about the seal on Wednesday.

Sheila Dean is one of two top officials with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine. Another official there has informed me that getting this close to a seal is a violation of federal law and also very dangerous for the seal and the person approaching it. So, please, to our readers, keep your distance and call the Marine Mammal Stranding Center if you see a seal (yes, I did call before …   more ›

Hurricane Sandy

Mantoloking Plans Geotube Project Along Oceanfront

But residents will need to sign new easements

Mantoloking is likely to work with the state to bolster the beachfront with something like a calzone. Well, sort of. Mantoloking officials announced Monday that the borough will likely partner with the state to construct a geotextile revetment – commonly known as a geotube – along its beachfront in order to guard against future ocean breaches. "To use Jersey terms, it'll be a calzone, a wrap," said Chris Nelson, the borough's special counsel for storm recovery. "And inside the calzone will be gravel and sand." The gravel and sand will be wrapped in the ultra-strong geotextile fabric, forming a tube which will then be placed underneath a dune which will eventually be built. Geotextile tubes have been used across the country in shore …

Football and Facebook: NJ Residents Back San Francisco in 2013 Super Bowl

Facebook data shows most Jersey users are rooting for the 49ers, switching their allegiance (temporarily) from the Giants or Eagles

It's not a surprise that most Facebook users in New Jersey started the football season solidly supporting the New York Giants or Philadelphia Eagles. "While winning seems to matter, NFL teams have local followings that are probably heavily influenced by family ties and/or where a person grew up," according to Facebook, which recently compiled data on users who are fans of an NFL team on the social network. But now that the locals' seasons are over and the Baltimore Ravens are heading to Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers, Jersey residents have shifted their allegiance. Perhaps surprisingly, the vast majority of New Jersey Facebook users favor the West Coast 49ers, with fans from Cape May, Salem, Gloucester and Camden counties…

What Would You Improve in the Boro or Beach in 2013?

If you could make a New Year's resolution for the Boro or Beach, what would it be?

More than 45 percent of Americans make a resolution every year, according to statisticbrain.com. Some people vow to live a healthier lifestyle, others promise to spend more time with family, and many say they will try to save money. As millions of Americans make resolutions to improve their lives, what could we do right here in Point Borough or Point Beach  to make it an even better place to live? Point Borough is working on a plan to improve Bridge Avenue. Any suggestions? Point Borough is also considering setting up a town-wide reverse 911 system, but there may be disagreement about whether it's needed or whether spending for it should be capped at a specific amount. The town can also opt to pay to use automated robo calls each time a …

Point Beach to Drop Early Bar Closing and Jenkinson's to Drop Lawsuits

Council, following mayor's recommendation, votes for agreement that also includes Jenkinson's help in boardwalk repairs

It's a Christmas miracle. The Point Beach Council, on the recommendation of the mayor, voted unanimously Tuesday night for a compromise with Jenkinson's that calls for rescinding the early bar closing ordinance and revising the parking plan in exchange for Jenkinson's to drop lawsuits against those measures and to pay up to $1 million towards boardwalk repair expenses. Councilmember Michael Corbally was absent. Mayor Vincent Barrella announced in the early portion of Tuesday night's meeting that he and Municipal Business Administrator Chris Riehl had met a few times with Jenkinson's representatives, including two meetings last week with Pat, Anthony and Frank Storino, who have owned  Jenkinson's, since 1976, that led to the agreement. …
