Planning a vacation or just a day trip? Patch has all the information on the Shore's best beaches
More than six months after Superstorm Sandy caused unprecedented damage to the Jersey Shore region, the beaches will be open for Memorial Day Weekend and the summer. While certain access points and facilities might be closed as municipalities continue to work on restoration, for the most part, the beaches will be operational. The only beach that remains off limits to the public is Mantoloking. The borough was home to a breach that split Ocean County's northern barrier island in half and was one of the hardest hit communities in New Jersey during the storm. So as you prepare to stick your toes in the sand, are you wondering what will be accessible after Sandy? Need to know how much it will cost to buy badges to your favorite beach? Curious …

Senate bill 2601 would also allow the county to exercise the power of eminent domain in order to erect dunes to protect lands, property and facilities near the beaches
The Ocean County Board of Freeholders are opposing a proposed state Senate bill that would permit counties to take over the operation of municipal beaches within its jurisdiction. Board members unanimously approved a resolution stating that Ocean County would be “actively impacted” by this legislation at the May 1 board meeting. “If Ocean County were to take over and maintain the 44 miles of just oceanfront beaches in Ocean County, it would not only be cost prohibitive but would also require taxpayers who don’t use the beaches to pay for them,” Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari said. The bill (S2601, A3891), sponsored by Sen. Bob Smith and Assemblywoman L. Grace Spencer, would authorize any county of the fifth or six class — Atlantic, Monmouth, …

Jenkinson's, Risden's, Martell's, Bradshaw's and Maryland Avenue beaches to be open
The public beaches in Point Pleasant Beach will be fully open by Memorial Day weekend or before, company officials said on Friday afternoon. While some Sandy-bashed beaches at the Jersey Shore are not going to be fully open by summer's unofficial start, those in Point Beach are on track to be accessible and staffed as usual. "The beaches will be open 100 percent the weekend before Memorial Day weekend and everything will be safe and clean, as it was last year," said Anthony Storino, president of Jenkinson's. Alice Lyons, owner of Risden's, said the beach will be open fully by Memorial Day weekend. Carla Vitale, daughter of Jay Vitale, owner of Aqua-Serve, said that the Maryland Avenue and Bradshaw's beaches will be open this summer as …

The rules side with special interests by blocking access to beaches and waterfronts, Sierra Club says.
State environmental officials have approved a revision of the state's public access rules for beaches, bays and tidal waterways, the Associated Press reported Friday. Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin says the new rules maintain existing public access, while granting more power to local communities to write their own access plans, subject to state approval, the AP reported. The Public Access Rule was signed Wednesday, and will take effect Nov. 5. Jeff Tittel, head of the Sierra Club's New Jersey chapter, wrote a blog post for Patch Friday saying the rules "side with special interests by blocking people from getting proper access to beaches and waterfronts." "When they first proposed the rule it was a major roll…

Martell's, Risden's, Bradshaw's and Maryland Avenue beaches will not be guarded
Jenkinson's beach may be the only beach in Point Pleasant Beach that has lifeguards on Sunday. On Friday, Marilou Halvorsen, Jenkinson's Marketing Director, said the plan was to have lifeguards working on Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting. Because Jenkinson's other businesses, including rides and eateries, will be open, there will be bathrooms open. Lifeguards and police have consistently implored the public not to venture into the ocean at unguarded beaches. That warning applies today when predictions are that rough surf will continue and, as of Sunday morning, there was a rip current warning. A staff member at Martell's said there is no plan to have lifeguards manning the beach at Martell's on Sunday. However, its restaurants, …

National Weather Service warning in effect through evening
Although Hurricane Leslie is hundreds of miles away out at sea, the risk of rip currents along Point Pleasant Beach and the entire Jersey Shore on Thursday afternoon and evening are high, according to the National Weather Service. Wind and wave conditions will support the development of "very strong rip currents," the NWS says. Swells from Leslie's large, slow-moving circulation are producing elevated surf along along most of the eastern seaboard, experts say. And that elevated surf has caused an abnormally high risk of rip currents, they say. "The rip currents will be life threatening to anyone who enters the surf," according to the NWS warning. As current surf conditions are three-to-five feet high, the high risk warning will …

What's fun, what's closed and more
Here are some fun things to do in Point Beach area and beyond and some useful things to know during Labor Day weekend. Jenkinson's is having events all weekend, culminating in fireworks scheduled for the evening of Labor Day (wind and weather conditions permitting). And Jenkinson's rides will still be open next week, which may be good news for local kids since Borough schools don't open until Thursday and Beach schools don't open until Wed. While you're out driving around this weekend, get your car washed for a good cause. Matthew Drew, 15, who will be entering Point Pleasant Borough High School as a sophomore next week, is working towards his Eagle Scout status, but he needs the community's help. He is running a car wash from 8 a.m. to 11…

Rough surf, humidity, possible thunderstorm make for a not-so-perfect beach day
Beaches in Point Beach were yellow-flagged late Monday morning, with badge checkers and lifeguards urging caution for those venturing into the rough surf. Staff at Jenkinson's and Risden's were asking beachgoers to go in only up to their knees and to use extra caution. Red flags marked off the boundaries of the designated swimming areas at Risden's. A badge checker at Bradshaw's Beach said they are letting people go all the way in, but urging caution. The Maryland Avenue beach was also yellow-flagged. On the other side of the Manasquan inlet, Manasquan beaches were green-flagged, meaning the water was comparatively calm and extra caution was not needed. As if the rough surf and humidity weren't enough to detract from the ideal beach day, …

Just seems to not be the time to make a major change. The chaos of late last October is still with us and no particular level of government springs to my mind as showing the wisdom needed to arrange the deck chairs on this Titanic. Let's get down to what is still open business and then obviously based on the debacle called Sandy, structural changes in government must be looked at. Right now watch…   more ›
