Christie Helps Reopen Belmar's Boardwalk

Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty: 'We're Back!'

Gov. Chris Christie, local officials and thousands of residents were on hand Wednesday morning to christen Belmar's rebuilt boardwalk. The 1.3 mile-long boardwalk, which spans the length of the borough, was destroyed Oct. 29 during Superstorm Sandy. Mayor Matt Doherty said crews began working to rebuild it in January and remained on schedule so it could be reopened by Memorial Day weekend.

Barbara, I'm sorry that your in-laws lost all. A lot of people did, including my nephew and family, and a lot are still living in housing and motels. This has nothing to do with Belmar's accomplishments, or losses. Ride down the streets of Belmar, and you will see houses with the big red X and others still cleaning out. This isn't about the Governor, it's about people who had to go through red-…   more ›

Check out images of the pipes and drums, marching bands, Sons of the Sheleighleigh, fire trucks and floats in the parade, as well as the throngs of parade-goers lining the curb and sidewalk down Main Street.

Extra Train Service Added for St. Patrick's Day Parade

Trains will shuttle parade goers between stops from Long Branch to Bay Head

Finding parking in Belmar and Lake Como for Sunday's St. Patrick's Day Parade requires a lot of Irish luck. Demand is high, and NJ Transit encourages parade goers to instead travel by train. NJ Transit is offering extra rail service on the North Jersey Coast Line between Long Branch and Bay Head to accommodate parade goers with trains between 9:46 a.m. to 9:31 p.m. Children 11 and younger travel free on weekends with each fare-paying adult. NJ Transit announced this year, as in years past, the corridor will add rail trips for hour service throughout the day to accommodate demand to Belmar for the St. Patrick's Day Parade festivities. Eleven additional rail trips will run: five northbound and six southbound. Here's the announcement from NJ …

FEMA Center in Bay Head Closes Saturday

The center will close 7 p.m. Sat.

The FEMA Center at the firehouse on Bridge Avenue in Bay Head will close for good at 7 p.m. Sat. "State and federal officials have been paying close attention to how many applicants are visiting centers throughout the state," says a prepared statement from FEMA. "Over the past weeks, the number of individuals seeking help at the center in Bay Head has dropped, indicating the information needs of survivors in the area have mostly been met." Similarly, FEMA is also closing a disaster recovery center in Newark due to declining visits. Since the Bay Head disaster recovery center opened Nov. 16, there have been nearly 2,000 visits from Hurricane Sandy survivors, the statement says. For more information about how to contact FEMA, please see …

Christie: 'Belmar Is Leading The Way To Recovery'

Governor on hand for first phase of boardwalk rebuild

Gov. Chris Christie and a host of elected officials stood amid a still recovering Ocean Avenue in Belmar Wednesday to kick off the rebuilding of the borough’s boardwalk 73 days after Hurricane Sandy. Flanked by Mayor Matthew Doherty and U.S. Reps. Chris Smith and Frank Pallone, Christie gave a decidedly upbeat speech to a crowd of more than 200 assembled in front of a massive pile driver as construction on the $6.6 million boardwalk commenced. Calling the Jersey Shore “the heartbeat of our state,’’ Christie said that Belmar was on the vanguard of shore towns rebuilding after the devastating storm. "Belmar is leading the way to recovery,'' Christie said. "Today is one of the great, great first moments of the rebuilding of our state, and, …

My daughter was there at the ceremony, she is very excited the boardwalk is being rebuilt. She can't wait for Summer. Her school has Beach Day every year. The kids really look forward to it. My child's class had to share a room with another class while the school's roof & damage to the top floor was repaired. I look at the kids & realize we lost things in Belmar. We were fortunate indeed. I hope …   more ›

Legislative, Local Officials Seek to Get 'Out in Front' of Sandy Recovery

State agencies, legislators, local officials attend special hearing in Wall

Municipalities throughout the region are looking for answers about how to deal with the lasting impact of superstorm Sandy. State Sen. Robert Singer and Assemblyman Sean Kean (both R-30) provided an opportunity Thursday night for residents to hear directly from relevant agencies at a special hearing attended by local officials at the Wall Municipal Complex. Representatives from FEMA, the Department of Banking and Insurance, the Small Business Administration and others answered questions on topics ranging from how shore towns can rebuild their boardwalks to how more inland towns can afford to clear tons of trees and debris from their roadways. "We really had a concentrated few towns that were impacted to the level where they need to avail …

Former principal and co-workers say Gabrielle Hillman, 21, had a bright future ahead of her

Gabrielle Hillman, a 21-year-old Belmar resident and St. Rose High School graduate found dead in her Pennsylvania college dorm room Monday, had a bright future ahead of her, according to those who knew her.  Hillman, a small animal science major at Delaware Valley College, was a bright young woman who made weekly trips home to volunteer at an animal shelter in Tinton Falls, St. Rose High School Principal Sr. Kathy Nace said Tuesday.  An employee at the Associated Humane Society in Tinton Falls, where Hillman began volunteering about a year ago, said Hillman was at the shelter on Saturday.  "We were shocked. We don't know what or why it happened," Lindsay Papa said of how the shelter employees received the news. "It's sad and hard to …
