Center closed pending investigation of chemicals and pesticides dumped in trash
The Point Pleasant Borough recycling center, just off Route 88 and Bridge Avenue, behind the Stop & Shop strip mall, is off limits for now as local and Ocean County officials investigate a load of pesticides and household chemicals dumped into household trash. The mixture of pesticides and household chemicals was dumped into trash at a home at the corner of Curtis Avenue and Cedar Street, which led to two Roselli sanitation workers becoming sickened, said Ocean County Fire Marshal and Borough Fire Chief Daniel Mulligan at the scene early Thursday afternoon. "It looks like someone was cleaning out household chemicals," Mulligan said. The Roselli workers were treated by Point Borough First Aid Squad and released and did not need to be …

Varano and Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele. But the the notice didn't just include the usual ocean and bayfront areas in South Seaside Park and Pelican island. And in case residents didn't get the message, police officers cruised slowly down street after street that Friday night. Bayview Avenue, Harbor Inn Road, Neary Avenue, Cedar Beach, Sandpiper Beach, …

Dennis Beach has found his life's calling
"The buzz saw snarled and rattled in the yard And made dust and dropped stove-length sticks of wood Sweet-scented stuff when the breeze drew across it"- 'Out-Out' -" by Robert Frost When the chainsaw kicked back several summers ago and struck Dennis Beach in two fingers of his left hand, he knew it was bad. A paramedic nearby ran to try and staunch the flow of blood. "It cut right into the bone," he recalled. "It was so bad they life-flew me from the fairgrounds. It didn't even resemble a finger. I really tried to get the doctor to cut it off. I'm glad he didn't listen to me." But unlike the boy in Frost's poem, Beach survived. He worked the remainder of the summer with just his right hand. "I had to make enough money for the year," he …

Fair has shortened hours today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There's still plenty to do on the last day of the Ocean County Fair, even though the fair has shortened hours, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fair visitors can pay a flat $20 to go on all of the rides today. Admission is $6 for adults and children over 10. Children 10 and under are admitted free. Fair organizer Kitty Meyer said some visitors are surprised to learn there is an admittance fee. The fair used to be free back when it was held at Ocean County Park. "We had no tents, none of the amusements we have now," she said. But the county can no longer afford to pay for the massive tents, security and some of the entertainment, now that the fair is held at Robert J. Miller Airpark on Route 530, Meyer said. "Our tent bill alone is $20,000," she said…

Fair runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Ocean County Fair organizer Kitty Meyer is one happy woman. The weather forecast for Day Four of the fair is for sunny skies and low humidity, just like yesterday. "Gorgeous," Meyer said. The fair - traditionally held in mid-July - is usually marked with sweltering temperatures. Unless you're talking about last year, when heavy rains left much of the fairgrounds underwater. Today the fair will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Robert J. Miller Airpark on Route 530. The number of events slated for today and tomorrow ramp up with the increased fair hours. Tonight visitors can have their pictures taken with several of the wolves from the Disney movie "Sorcerer's Apprentice." Other animals from Howling Woods Farm also will be on hand. The …
