Residents from near and far, including a rocker, walk Sunday morning to help fight cancer
They came with stories of survival, stories of loss, and hope for a cure. They came from nearby and far away, to walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Point Pleasant Beach on Sunday. Peter Criss, former drummer with the rock band Kiss and current solo artist, was not playing the role of rock star at Sunday's walk. The Wall resident just wanted to blend in and walk and hope and contribute like everyone else. He identifies more than most people might guess with many other survivors in the crowd. He is a survivor of male breast cancer. Individuals and groups from all over New Jersey, and at least a few from Pennsylvania, walked to raise money for the American Cancer Society. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here's a list of local breast cancer support groups.
One in 8 American women and 1 in 1,000 American men will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. It’s estimated that more than 2 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer and fight for their lives each year. Breast cancer is difficult to face alone—for both patients and their loved ones. To help in the battle, there are a number of local resources and support groups. Where are support groups in your area? What times do they meet? Who can attend? You might be able to find help fighting breast cancer and other types of cancers at your local grocery store and fitness centers, according to the research findings of Dr. Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D, RD. Dr. Neuhouser is a nutritional epidemiologist with a background in nutritional sciences. She is an investigator at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her research is focused on lifestyle factors such as nutrition and physical activity. Some factors may prevent breast and prostate cancer and improve survivorship in those diagnosed with cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 American women will die …

18th Annual run at Sea Girt Army Camp promotes breast cancer awareness
The 18th Annual "Just Us Girls" 5K run for breast cancer is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Sea Girt Army Camp, organizers said. The event sponsored by the Manasquan Elks 2534 promotes breast cancer awareness. Participants can print out race forms at the event's website or register online with the Jersey Shore Running Club. The entry fee is $20, and includes a long sleeve shirt and free buffet and celebration at the Manasquan Elks, 17 Stockton Lake Boulevard. Trophies will be awarded to the first three female finishers in each category. Men are also welcome to participate. Point Beach downtown stays open later, starting today, and donates towards cancer fight
"Pink Out Point Beach" is starting today, which means later hours and a chance to help fight breast cancer. Many Point Pleasant Beach merchants will be open until 8 p.m. in the downtown area of Arnold and Bay avenues and donating a portion of their proceeds from noon until 8 p.m. to the American Cancer Society. "Pink Out Point Beach," coordinated by the Point Beach Chamber of Commerce, runs from tonight, (Friday, Oct. 5) through Halloween, Oct. 31.
