Cancer Concern Center Raises $5,000 at Wharfside

Summer kickoff revenue will help center help cancer patients

  The Cancer Concern Center's Summer Kickoff party on Saturday raised $5,000 that will be used to help cancer patients and survivors. About 150 people enjoyed the Saturday night fundraiser, featuring live bands, a buffet and lots of sunshine on the Patio Bar at the Wharfside, Channel Drive, Point Pleasant Beach. The revenue has been sorely needed to help keep the all-volunteer center in operation, since their biggest fundraiser of the year was canceled after Superstorm Sandy. Since the storm, the center has been dealing with the triple whammy of losing a fundraiser, having less available cash flow than ever, and many of their officials, board members, clients and volunteers being flooded by Sandy, explained Heather Keefe, who does pro-bono…

FEMA Center in Bay Head Closes Saturday

The center will close 7 p.m. Sat.

  The FEMA Center at the firehouse on Bridge Avenue in Bay Head will close for good at 7 p.m. Sat. "State and federal officials have been paying close attention to how many applicants are visiting centers throughout the state," says a prepared statement from FEMA. "Over the past weeks, the number of individuals seeking help at the center in Bay Head has dropped, indicating the information needs of survivors in the area have mostly been met." Similarly, FEMA is also closing a disaster recovery center in Newark due to declining visits. Since the Bay Head disaster recovery center opened Nov. 16, there have been nearly 2,000 visits from Hurricane Sandy survivors, the statement says.
