Department of Defense announces that Marine Cpl. Christopher M. Monahan died on Monday on combat duty
Sadly, there will soon be five plaques at Central Regional High School's War Memorial for fallen alumni killed in foreign wars. Almost a month to the day after the memorial was dedicated, Marine Cpl. Christopher M. Monahan Jr. was killed on Nov. 26, the Department of Defense announced today. Monahan, 25, Island Heights, died while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, the defense department said. He was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, the D.O.D. said. Central's Mahoney sets meet record in 100 breaststroke
The action in the pool was nonstop Saturday night at the Ocean County YMCA for the Shore Conference Boys Swimming Championships. Fans and spectators came from all over the Shore to Toms River to see the best high school swimmers in the conference compete and even a few break records. By the time the 11 events were over, Christian Brothers Academy toppled the competition, winning the team title for the 22nd time as the Colts amassed 413 points and finished in the top five in nearly every event. Both Toms River North and Toms River South looked impressive, finishing in second and third with respective scores of 209.5 and 189.
