Council members Toni DePaola and Bill Borowsky were sworn in to three-year terms at Sunday's organization meeting at Borough Hall. Jerry Dasti was reappointed municipal attorney with the lone no vote cast by Council member Chris Goss. Goss was also the lone no vote when votes were taken for a number of other appointments including: Council member Robert Sabosik as council president and as a planning board member; Hutchins, Farrell, Meyer and Allison to be reappointed municipal auditor; Jan L. Point Boro GOP Says They're Not Using Too Much Surplus

Republican council members defend use of most of surplus to avoid higher tax increase

The veteran Republican members of Point Borough Council say they have left enough money in surplus for next year and have adopted a sound budget. Councilmembers Bob Sabosik and Toni DePaola are refuting Democratic Councilmember Chris Leitner's opinion that too much of the surplus was used in the municipal budget adopted on Tuesday night, which may lead to a higher than necessary tax increase next year. "We went over this budget with a fine tooth comb," DePaola said. "It's a sound budget. And I believe the town is left with enough surplus. That comes from tax dollars and the best way to use it is to give it back to the people. It seems silly to raise taxes even more when we're sitting on that money." Sabosik said the new budget uses $1.2 …

It would help to step back for a minute and remember that increased tax collection stated in the article which were a large part of the surplus were for 2011 compared to 2010. Are 2011/2012 collections on pace with the improved rate? The other major factor was the reconstruction of the town's financial records. Neither of these factors directly relate to expense control. I think Mr Leitner's …   more ›

UPDATE: Point Borough Councilman Remig Not Running to Focus More on School, Career

DePaola is one of four candidates running in uncontested primaries

Point Borough Republican Council Member Mitch Remig is not running for re-election, but Republican Council Member Antoinette DePaola will seek another term. The deadline to file to run in the June 5 primary for the two, three-year council seats was 4 p.m. Monday. William Borowsky, owner of Nature's Reward fresh produce store on Bridge Avenue, near the Stop and Shop shopping plaza, is running as a Republican with DePaola. The Democrats who filed are James McClure, Fay Court, and Salvatore Martino, Barnegat Boulevard. With two candidates running in each primary, the …

Point Borough Council Among "Teachers for a Day"

Council members, state legislators and business owners teach in borough schools

Point Borough Councilman Robert Sabosik came to school prepared. He had re-read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Animal Farm by George Orwell so he could help Megan Fritz teach her Borough High School Language Arts classes on Wednesday as part of the school district's "Teacher for a Day" program. The "teachers" were invited by the Point Pleasant Education Association (PPEA). Interviewed in the classroom that afternoon, Sabosik said he was impressed with students and teachers alike. "These young adults are great," he said. "They're very respectful, they want to learn, they have a real quest for knowledge. That shows the high quality of education in the schools." Sabosik was one of many elected officials and business owners who …

New Point Boro Attorney Charging More than Quote from 2011 Attorney

But Jerry Dasti's experience makes him worth it, says GOP

Jerry Dasti, the new Point Borough attorney, is charging thousands more than the quote from last year's attorney, but he's worth it because he has more Borough and municipal experience, said Republican council members. "Jerry Dasti is the best attorney for the town," said Republican councilman Robert Sabosik. "I have nothing but the best interests of the town at heart. We're not doing anything political." Dasti, of the firm of Dasti, Murphy, McGuckin Ulaky, Cherkos and Connors, based in Lacey Township, will be paid a maximum of $79,850 for February through December, according to a copy of his contract. Dasti's original quote was a maximum of $93,500 for 12 months. Dasti said in an interview last week that the fee of $79,850 will include …
