Needs time for personal interests; endorses Democrats
Point Beach Councilmember Kristine Tooker is not running for reelection because she wants to pursue personal interests and because she has faith in the two Democrats running. Tooker, a former registered Republican now registered as an Independent, is endorsing Democratic incumbent Michael Corbally and Democrat Tom Davis for two, three-year council seats up for grabs in November. Davis is running as a Democrat, after running unsuccessfully as an Independent last November when Republicans Stephen Reid and Andy Cortes won two council seats. In the upcoming primary on June 4, Corbally and Davis are running unopposed on the Democratic ticket. Republicans Tom Vogel, former mayor and councilman, and Tom Toohey are running unopposed in the June …

In possible turn-around, Point Beach Republicans say they might be in favor of District 4 parking plan
Maybe the District 4 Parking Plan wasn't such a bad idea after all. Then again, maybe it was. Point Beach Republican candidates Andy Cortes and Stephen Reid, who had always been staunchly against the overnight parking restrictions established this summer for non-residents in District 4, now say that maybe they're in favor of it. If they're elected, would they vote for it next year? Maybe they would. But maybe they wouldn't. The two said at Thursday night's council candidates forum that they've been doing a lot of walking door to door and talking with residents in District 4 and beyond. They said they're hearing a lot of reports that the parking plan helped cut down on noise and litter while it was in effect from early summer until Sept. …

Says schedule does not permit it
The League of Women Voters started asking Point Borough municipal candidates on Sept. 18 if they would participate in a candidates forum. However, Borough Republican candidates Antoinette DePaola and Bill Borowsky said at the time that their schedules were too booked up. They are challenged by Democrats Salvatore Martino and Jim McClure. Lois Jacobsen, a Borough resident and official with the League of Women Voters of Ocean County, had spoken during the public comment portion of the Sept. 18 Borough Council meeting about how the League would like to schedule a candidates forum at Borough Hall. Shortly afterwards, the council went into a closed session meeting for unrelated reasons, but there was also some conversation about the prospect …

Leder hosted $50,000-per-person fundraiser during which Romney called 47 percent of voters 'victims.'
Gov. Mitt Romney said in a video recently released by magazine Mother Jones that 47 percent of American voters consider themselves "victims." "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," said Romney in the video. "All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what… These are people who pay no income tax.” These comments were made at the home of 76ers co-owner …

Republican council members defend use of most of surplus to avoid higher tax increase
The veteran Republican members of Point Borough Council say they have left enough money in surplus for next year and have adopted a sound budget. Councilmembers Bob Sabosik and Toni DePaola are refuting Democratic Councilmember Chris Leitner's opinion that too much of the surplus was used in the municipal budget adopted on Tuesday night, which may lead to a higher than necessary tax increase next year. "We went over this budget with a fine tooth comb," DePaola said. "It's a sound budget. And I believe the town is left with enough surplus. That comes from tax dollars and the best way to use it is to give it back to the people. It seems silly to raise taxes even more when we're sitting on that money." Sabosik said the new budget uses $1.2 …

Republican majority rehires firm removed by Democrats in 2011
The Republican majority on the Point Pleasant Borough Council voted Tuesday night to replace CME Associates as the borough engineer with Remington, Vernick and Vena, seven months after CME's contract with the borough had expired. The Borough's new contract with Remington will expire in December 31, 2014, said Borough Administrator David Maffei on Wednesday. Remington's hourly rates range from $52 to $125, and CME's hourly rates range from $58 to $140, depending on which staff member is doing the work (please see attached PDF for rates charged by Remington and CME, as provided by the Borough Administrator's office on Wednesday). The vote for a new engineer was criticized by Councilman Christopher Goss, a Democrat, who questioned making the …

Point Borough Republican committee to submit 3 nominations to council to fill unexpired term
Point Borough Councilman Mitch Remig has to resign from his council seat before July 9, when he will be sworn in as a full-time detective with the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, said county Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford on Thursday afternoon. Remig, who will earn $38,000 annually in what will be his first full-time job as a law enforcement officer, said on Thursday that he hasn't decided yet when he will resign, but acknowledged it will be before July 9. Remig will have to resign from his council seat, which expires at the end of the year, because appointees to the county prosecutor's office are not permitted, according to county and state ethics guidelines, to be active in partisan politics, Ford said. Ford said that when she …

Governor will host 'town hall' meeting at at Lake Riviera Middle School as budget battle looms
Gov. Chris Christie will host a town hall meeting in Brick next week, his office said late Monday. The meeting will be held next Tuesday, June 26 at Lake Riviera Middle School off Beaverson Boulevard. Doors open at 2:15 p.m. and seating will be on a first come, first serve basis, Christie's staffers said. The event is open to the public. The governor's ongoing series of town halls, where queries from the public are taken in addition to the governor's statements, are often packed events that cover a range of topics concerning both state and local issues. Previous town halls held throughout the state have seen Christie go on the offensive against political rivals, promote his public policy agenda and, occasionally, survive some heckling. The…

Three candidates have different views on fees for bars to stay open until 2 a.m.
George Loder, running as an "Independent Republican" for one of two Point Beach Borough Council seats, is against the town offering bars the option of paying a fee to stay open later. "That doesn't solve the problem because the bars are still open until 2 a.m.," said Loder. Ironically, one of his opponents, Republican Andy Cortes, agrees: sort of. "If they're closing the bars for a quality of life reason, but then you let the bars pay to stay open until 2 a.m., how does that address the problem?" Cortes asked rhetorically. "If I lived in District 4, I'd feel sold out. Because then it's not about quality of life. It's about quantity of money." Also, Cortes said, since the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control has not yet rendered an …

Jerry Dasti, who was borough attorney for many years, is likely to be appointed tonight by GOP majority despite not submitting lowest bid
The Republican majority on Point Borough Council is expected to vote tonight to give former Borough Attorney Jerry Dasti his old job back. The item is on the agenda (see attached PDF), along with other key appointments, such as borough auditor, bond counsel, public defender, conflict attorney and conflict public defender. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Borough Hall. At the Jan. 2 reorganization meeting, the narrow GOP majority, consisting of Robert Sabosik, Antoniette DePaola, Mitch Remig and John Wisniewski, voted down Democratic Mayor William Schroeder's nominations for those positions. Residents have already begun questioning the appointment of Dasti since he did not submit the lowest quote for the attorney position and GOP …

69-Tom Davis got a sweetheart deal from the town's assessor, and Tooker got a job for someone that lives in Toms River. . .am I mistaken? PS: the Star Ledger reported Sunday that the Beach's tax ratables are down 4.26%. That figure might not mean much until those who have not gotten property reductions get their new tax bill.   more ›
