Mini Taco Bowls and other Super Bowl Recipes

Getting ready for the big game Sunday? Here are some recipes that are perfect for your football gathering

On Sunday, millions will tune in to watch one of the biggest sporting events of the year, the Super Bowl. Don't let your party guests go hungry; check out these easy to make Super Bowl recipes. This recipe is inspired by White Lake-Highland Patch Readers Paulette Gollan and Dan Houston. Gollan said, "I use a mini muffin pan, wonton wrappers, seasoned ground beef, shredded cheese and green onions. Bake for 10 minutes. YUM!" Top them off with some salsa, and Houston said you have yourself the perfect snack. I didn't have wonton wrappers or a mini muffin pan on hand, so I tweaked Gollan's recipe a bit and used some tortillas instead. I also used light or fat free ingredients to make these mini tacos a little more healthy for those of us …

Free New Year's Day Friendship Dinner at Sacred Heart Parish Hall

All are welcome between 1 and 3 p.m.

Once again Sacred Heart Parish, along with St. Gregory’s Pantry, will host the annual New Year's Day Fellowship Dinner from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mgrs. Casey Hall. The meal is free and all are welcome to eat at the parish hall near the church at 751 Main Ave. (Route 35 South), Bay Head. Even though the church, which was flooded by Sandy, is still not open, the hall is open and will again be used for the annual dinner, just as it has been for three years. "If you or someone you know has fallen upon hard times, needs a hot meal, or just needs some fellowship following our visit by Hurricane Sandy, please encourage them to attend," says a flier on the church website. Free Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Dinners

Volunteers needed at Point Pleasant Presbyterian and St. Paul's United Methodist Church

Two local churches that have been offering free, hot meals to those impacted by Sandy or otherwise needy are continuing that tradition for Christmas. Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church, at 701 Forman Ave., on the corner of Bay Avenue, Point Pleasant Beach, is offering dinner from noon to 2 p.m. on Christmas, as they have been for many years, said Pastor Carl Wilton. Joe Leone's Italian Specialties and Martell's, among other local restaurants, and St Gregory's Pantry, are helping with the effort, Wilton said. "Come one, come all to the Christmas Dinner, open to anyone looking for a warm and friendly place to enjoy a holiday meal in good company!" Wilton wrote in a Patch event listing. "Special thanks to Joe Leone's and Martell's for …

Restaurants donate food for dinner at the Elks Lodge

Local restaurants are again joining forces to provide a free, hot dinner for those impacted by Sandy, or otherwise needy. The Christmas dinner, which will be served at the Elks Lodge on Arnold Avenue in Point Pleasant from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, was arranged by Stephanie Salardino, who planned the free Thanksgiving dinner held at the Elks the night before Thanksgiving. "The Thanksgiving dinner went very well and we had a great turnout so I decided to put a Christmas dinner together," said Salardino, a longtime Point Beach summer resident, whose family's house on Beacon Lane was heavily damaged by Sandy. Participating restaurants are: 709 Point Beach; Hoffman's Ice Cream; Martell's Sea Breeze and Tiki Bar; Spano's; Surf Taco; The Beanery; …

Thanksgiving Recipes: How to Cook a Turkey

If you need a new recipe, give one of these non-traditional twists a try

There are many ways to cook everyone’s favorite holiday bird. Each family has its own special technique for cooking a turkey, whether it's using an old family recipe, adding a secret ingredient or shopping at a certain store in town that helps make the turkey taste all the better. If you're hosting Thanksgiving this year, you can try any of the recipes below to add a new kick to your feast. If you're attending someone else’s dinner, hopefully their turkey will taste as good as one of these! Just the name of this recipe makes my mouth water. An Allrecipes.com user contributes this Greek take on turkey, which combines ground beef and pork with tangerine juice, rice and other ingredients for an in-bird stuffing. This one requires no pre-…

Thanksgiving Recipes: How to Cook Stuffing and Other Favorite Side Dishes

Here are some recipes for Thanksgiving's most popular side dishes.

What would a turkey be on Thanksgiving without its faithful side companions? Often more popular than the turkey itself, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and other favorites are staples of the meal. Try one of the recipes below to bring a new taste to your Thanksgiving feast. Roasted Winter Squash Gauge the amount of squash you’ll need by allowing 1 small squash (acorn and butternut are good choices) for every four people. Cut each squash in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Brush sides and inner cavity with olive oil and place flesh-side down on a lightly-oiled baking sheet. Roast for approximately 45 minutes or until flesh is very soft and easy pulls away from the skin. After removing squash from oven, let cool for a bit, then…
