REMINDER: Point Boro Cracking Down on Drunk Drivers

Extra enforcement started Friday as part of national campaign

Law enforcement officers from Point Pleasant are cracking down on drunk drivers as part of the summer 2012 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Borough police are using grant money allocated through this campaign to add to the drunk driving enforcement they do all year. The extra enforcement began on Friday and continues through September 3rd and includes local and state law enforcement officers conducting sobriety checkpoints, looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated. A concentrated national effort, the campaign helps to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement and public education tools, including posters, banners and mobile video display signs. It's great to have such a campaign. Now, let's reread this article then replace all parts that refer to drinking and replace them with cell phone usage (either talking or texting). The only difference I see would be the 20% of fatalities (perhaps) and that the cell phone impairment ends immediately after signing off. When will there be an equivalent effort for this problem. UPDATE: Point Beach Has 10 Days to Respond to Boardwalk Appeal

Boardwalk appeals alcohol ordinance; asks state to block enforcement until appeal decided

Point Beach has 10 business days to respond to an appeal filed by boardwalk businesses asking the state to kill a new law that prohibits bars from serving alcohol past midnight, according to a state official. The town also has 10 business days to respond to Jenkinson's and Martell's request that the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) "stay" or block local enforcement of the new ordinance until ABC decides on the appeal, said Zach Hosseini, an ABC spokesman. "We'll make a decision shortly after that (on the 'stay'), we're not going to let this drag out," Hosseini said. The ordinance is scheduled to go into effect on July 1. Hosseini said attorneys at ABC are reading the appeal, along with a voluminous file of approximately…

OOTBF: BTW, My children told me the same things too when they attended PPB school system. Stoned, drunk and then going to class. The parents and public are being duped and the reason why so many think the PPB school system is good. Did your daughters also tell you about all the cheating that is going on? That is most likely why their SAT scores are such a joke. What is amazing? Is how many kids …   more ›

Earlier Bar Closing Ordinances Postponed by Point Beach Council

Two ordinances, one for midnight closing and one for bars to pay fees to stay open later, are carried until May 15 meeting

Ordinances calling for bars to stop serving alcohol two hours earlier and one allowing bars to pay fees to stay open later were both "carried," or postponed until the May 15 Point Beach Council meeting by the Point Beach Council on Tuesday night. The decision to "carry" was made at the request of an attorney for Jenkinson's to give boardwalk business owners and elected officials more time to meet privately to try to come up with a solution. The votes to carry both ordinances were cast by council members Bret Gordon, William Mayer, Tim Lurie and Stephen Reid. Council members Kristine Tooker and Michael Corbally voted against carrying both ordinances. Mayor Vincent Barrella did not vote, but spoke in favor of carrying the ordinances to allow…

I'm shutting down comments on this and the other Point Beach story because of the amounts of complaints I have received and the incredible amount of inaccurate information being spread. And here's another reason: I need to get some work done and cannot spend even more hours monitoring comments.   more ›
