Extra enforcement started Friday as part of national campaign
Law enforcement officers from Point Pleasant are cracking down on drunk drivers as part of the summer 2012 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Borough police are using grant money allocated through this campaign to add to the drunk driving enforcement they do all year. The extra enforcement began on Friday and continues through September 3rd and includes local and state law enforcement officers conducting sobriety checkpoints, looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated. A concentrated national effort, the campaign helps to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement and public education tools, including posters, banners and mobile video display signs. Boardwalk appeals alcohol ordinance; asks state to block enforcement until appeal decided
Point Beach has 10 business days to respond to an appeal filed by boardwalk businesses asking the state to kill a new law that prohibits bars from serving alcohol past midnight, according to a state official. The town also has 10 business days to respond to Jenkinson's and Martell's request that the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) "stay" or block local enforcement of the new ordinance until ABC decides on the appeal, said Zach Hosseini, an ABC spokesman. "We'll make a decision shortly after that (on the 'stay'), we're not going to let this drag out," Hosseini said. The ordinance is scheduled to go into effect on July 1. Two ordinances, one for midnight closing and one for bars to pay fees to stay open later, are carried until May 15 meeting
Ordinances calling for bars to stop serving alcohol two hours earlier and one allowing bars to pay fees to stay open later were both "carried," or postponed until the May 15 Point Beach Council meeting by the Point Beach Council on Tuesday night. The decision to "carry" was made at the request of an attorney for Jenkinson's to give boardwalk business owners and elected officials more time to meet privately to try to come up with a solution. The votes to carry both ordinances were cast by council members Bret Gordon, William Mayer, Tim Lurie and Stephen Reid. It's great to have such a campaign. Now, let's reread this article then replace all parts that refer to drinking and replace them with cell phone usage (either talking or texting). The only difference I see would be the 20% of fatalities (perhaps) and that the cell phone impairment ends immediately after signing off. When will there be an equivalent effort for this problem.
