DPW: Don't Shovel Until After We Plow
Point Beach Emergency Management is asking residents and visitors to refrain from driving on local roads, unless they have an emergency during the storm, due to the snow and 55 mph winds which could cause limited visibility. The Point Pleasant Beach Department of Public Works is also requesting that all residents refrain from shoveling their driveways and sidewalks until after the snow is cleared from curb to curb on their street. The remainder of the Point Beach Office of Emergency Management message on the municipal web site home page is as follows: "A coastal snow storm will pass through the area today (02/08/13) and tomorrow (02/09/13) that will dump 4 to 10 inches of snow and produce wind gusts of up to 55 mph. Pilot program launching in Ocean County to distribute a limited number of the apps free of charge
As the battle to curtail texting and driving rages on, law enforcement officials continue to look for ways to discourage drivers from taking the risk. A cell phone application that disables cell phones when a vehicle is traveling faster than a certain rate of speed may be the answer police departments have sought. “Prosecutors have now been given great authority to charge a person with assault by auto or vehicular homicide, if it is proven that they were texting while driving,” Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said. 4 Injured, 1 Charged With DWI in Brick Accident
An early morning accident damaged three vehicles and resulted in injuries to four people, with one facing multiple motor vehicle charges including driving while intoxicated. The accident occurred at 1:49 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of routes 70 and 88, according to Brick Police Sgt. David G. Bedrosian. Police say Bryan Vanderburgh, 27, of Brick, was driving a 2012 Nisssan Frontier pickup and violated the red light signal as he was traveling eastbound on Route 70, approaching the Laurelton exchange. His vehicle struck a 1994 Acura Integra driven by Edwin Triana, 28, of Toms River, who was proceeding through the intersection on Route 88 in the westbound direction. Triana had a green light at the time, according to an accident report. …

Federal transportation agency claims even hands-free use is hazardous.
Should drivers be banned from using a cellphone, even in hands-free mode? The federal National Transportation Safety Board doesn't believe it makes any difference whether the driver is holding the cellphone or using it in handsfree mode—all cellphone use by motorists is hazardous, the agency said. In a statement issued this week, the board (which has no legal authority to regulate cellphones itself) urged state governments to ban all cellphone use by drivers. New Jersey already has one of the toughest laws in the nation on the use of cellphones while driving. And a bill introduced last month in the Assembly would make it even tougher, adding up to two months in jail to the current $100 fine. But the state Court of Appeals interpreted that …
