Still no explanation of cause of surge that affected parts of Point Boro
Were any of your home appliances, surge protectors, circuit breakers, computers, equipment or food affected by last Thursday's power surge in Point Borough? If you haven't done so already, call 1-800-662-3115 to file a claim for the value of the damage. JCP&L will investigate and compensate if they find the loss was due to a JCP&L defect or malfunction. So far, no word from the company on what caused the power surge that fried everything from refrigerators to computer equipment and sent firefighters running from one call to another for hours in parts of the Borough. Surge triggered fire alarms all over town, sending volunteer firefighters scrambling
JCP&L is investigating a power surge that triggered fire alarms and sent volunteer firefighters zipping all over Point Borough on Thursday. "We had about 50 calls from people in that area, so we sent our people to the substation at Route 88 and Lynn Road and to check the two circuits out of that substation, to see if there was any problem with the circuits," said Peter Johner, JCP&L area manager external affairs on Friday morning. Tax assessments may be lowered if property flooded or damaged in storm
UPDATE: New form attached to story for property owners requesting lower tax assessments If you own a home or business damaged by Sandy, you can ask your town for a lower tax assessment. In Point Pleasant Beach, the town issued a notice advising property owners that to request a reassessment, they should write to the town and include the following information: "Property Address, Block/Lot, Name of Owner(s) Contact Numbers - Cell and Land Lines Address Where Currently Living - Permanent or Temporary Email Address Describe the damage in as much detail as possible. The Small Business Administration (SBA) and FEMA will explain how businesses damaged by Sandy should apply for financial assistance at a meeting on Monday at the White Sands. The Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce and the Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce are welcoming business owners and managers from across Ocean and Monmouth counties to attend the session from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the White Sands, 1205 Ocean Ave., Point Beach. JCP&L reports that there are only a small amount of Point Beach residents who are still awaiting power who can safely receive power, according to the Point Beach police department. "They are expediting their efforts to complete those areas as soon as possible," says a prepared statement from police. The Building Department is again notifying owners of properties where meters have been pulled or blocked by JCP&L because of flood water damage that they will have to hire a licensed electrician to repair or replace all flood-damaged equipment, the statement says. Christie said all power in NJ would be restored by now
Despite assurances by Gov. Christie that the entire state would have power again by yesterday, there are thousands still in the dark in New Jersey, including 601 in just Monmouth and Ocean counties, according to the JCP&L outage map. As of 3:15 p.m. Monday, there are 441 outages in Monmouth and 160 in Ocean and about 3,100 outages among JCP&L customers in the 13 counties it serves, the map shows. In Morris County alone there are 739 JCP&L customers reporting outages. PSE&G has 278 outages on Monday afternoon, including 19 outages caused by Sandy and 259 caused by the nor'easter. All power that can be safely restored in Point Beach is expected to be completed tomorrow, according to an updated report from the police department. "The Point Beach Building Department has advised that inspectors walking door to door have completed their inspections," according to a prepared statement from the police department. Process to replace faulty meters explained at Friday council meeting
JCP&L crews are working on restoring power to a widely-darkened Point Beach, as electrical inspectors continue to identify homes and businesses that have water-damaged meters. As complaints have mounted from many residents and businesses who have been without power for 11 days, and some that had power restored only to have it snatched away again by the nor'easter, the town has been trying to expedite the process for the lights to be turned back on, officials said at a Point Beach emergency council meeting at Borough Hall on Friday afternoon.
